Letter Me? Voter Id?!!
For 32 years, I have voted in every single election in Epsom, New
Hampshire except for a couple ‘off year’ elections when I was out of
the country or seriously ill. Since I was 18 years old, I have
considered it my civic, patriotic and ethical duty to exercise my
right to vote.
This year, at age 66, I will be asked for my photo ID. I have a
drivers license, no problem, except as a pain in the butt!
But, what about the 70, 80, 90 year old ladies and gentlemen
including a special mention: US Armed Forces Veterans? How many
elderly will be denied their right to vote because they don’t have a
drivers license or passport? Access to original birth certificate?
What kind of hassle, not to mention expense, to get one? How many
were born in a farmhouse in the middle of nowhere when at-home
births were recorded only in the family Bible? (Psst! What did I do
with that Bible anyway?)
Whether in a small town or city ward, you can’t tell me there are
not enough “locals” hanging around the polls on voting day to vouch
for anyone that the “keepers of the checklist” think may be
questionable!
Affidavits? How long is that going to take for the elderly (or
anyone) to fill out? What kind of lines can we expect waiting on all
that “oath taking”? How much is this going to cost? Hmmm. Or could
this just be “good ole fashioned Jim Crow like voter suppression”?

Epsom Public Library
Jennifer Vaughn, author and news anchor at WMUR-TV, will be the
featured speaker at the Epsom Library on Wednesday, July 25, at 7:30
pm. She will be discussing her debut novel, “Last Flight Out” as
part of the library’s Adult Summer Reading Program.
According to the author, the novel “includes a little bit of
everything I’ve seen during my career thus far. A mix of
politics sprinkled with a health crisis for my main character, and a
touch of devious behavior to round it all out.”
Jennifer has been with the ABC affiliate in Manchester for the past
12 years, anchoring the 6 pm news, doing some medical reporting, and
interviewing every presidential candidate to pass over the border
since 1999. She has also moderated nationally televised presidential
debates and has conducted one-on-one interviews with past and
sitting presidents of the United States.
“My second novel, still in the works,” she said, “will feature some
of New Hampshire’s unique flavor for all of us who live the vibrancy
and beauty of New England.”
Please notice this program, open to non-residents as well as patrons
of the library, begins at 7:30 pm, not 7:00 pm. Refreshments
will be served and a door prize will be given away.
