Letter To The Editor

I am writing in strong support of Rep. Carol McGuire of Epsom for another term in the New Hampshire House of Representatives.  Her work ethic in the House has been a shining example to her colleagues. She is thoughtful, conservative and a strong leader.

Rep. McGuire is the chair of the Executive Departments and Administration Committee where all legislation related to building codes and trade licensing are heard. As a home builder, my personal experience with Rep. McGuire and the manner in which she runs this committee has been superlative.  She is a seeker of solutions and she is not influenced by special interest groups.  Her common sense approach is balanced between consumer protection, controlling state spending and meeting the needs of small business owners.

This month, the Home Builders and Remodelers Association of NH awarded Rep. McGuire their Legislator of the Year award.  On election day, I urge everyone who believes in high morals and good government to vote for Carol McGuire.

Valley Artisans
Artist For The Month Of October

Joyce Lemay is our artisan for the month of October. She has been a member since 1981 and resides in Chichester, NH with her family. She is an accomplished quilter and our shop is decorated with many of her wall hangings and table runners. She also makes felt ornaments for the holidays and festively decorated gift bags. We also have a Free Raffle every month and Joyce has donated a kitchen tea towel that has been stitched and appliquéed. It will make a perfect gift for you or a loved one.

Our shop is filling up with the most wonderfully crafted items. We just had a Fall Open House this weekend and will be participating in the NH Open Doors Weekend on November 3rd and 4th. As the cooler weather arrives, we have started to heat our rustic building with our very large wood stove and there is probably some of the warm mulled cider left from the past weekend. So come on in, it will warm your heart and soul.

Hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Wednesday through Sunday, at 10 Goboro Rd. Epsom, N.H. We’re 1/4 mile east on Route 4/202. From the Epsom traffic circle, take a left at the first traffic light. Going west, take the first right at the second traffic light after the Epsom Fire Station. You can also find us on Facebook, and at

Letter

Recently my family decided that we really wanted to put up lawn signs for some candidates we had read about, talked to friends about, and liked a lot.  We got a sign for Nancy Fraher, who is running for State Senate, and a sign for Annie Kuster, who is running for Congress, and we put them out at the end of our driveway. It’s our way of saying that we are voters, we care about our community and our state, and we do our homework before we choose.

The Annie Kuster sign disappeared overnight.  We got another one, and put that up, and it disappeared!  We got a third one.  Nancy Fraher’s sign is still there.  What’s going on?  Can’t we hold an election, the thing that makes democracy so special, without being uncivil and unneighborly?  If you don’t like our candidates, put up signs for your preferred ones.  Don’t steal our signs.

It’s against the law, by the way.  RSA 664:17 Placement and Removal of Political Advertising. “No person shall remove, deface, or knowingly destroy any political advertising which is placed on or affixed to public property or any private property except the owner of the property, persons authorized by the owner of the property, or a law enforcement officer removing improper advertising.”

Sincerely,

Paul and Sandra Pfaff

Mrs. Sandra Pfaff,

“Utility Infielder”

Sandy Pfaff is one of the friendly faces first seen by visitors to ECS. She has been serving as a substitute at ECS for ten years. Sandy’s flexibility and cheerful attitude have enabled her to serve as a paraprofessional, substitute teacher, and a long-term substitute for a staff member on leave. She loves being around and working with the staff and children at ECS. She also loves the idea of facing different challenges each day, of doing “a little bit of everything” she can, to help the school community.

Sandy believes that ECS is one of the best schools in the area, and is pleased her son went to school here; he is currently studying forensics at UNH. In her spare time, Sandy enjoys quilting and sailing with her husband.

Debating Points

I appreciate Roger Bennett and Bradley Keyes joining the “free stater” debate, Suncook Valley Sun, October 3, 2012. Motivation of “free staters” is a top concern of mine. My opponent, Carol McGuire, is a “free stater.” The majority of New Hampshirites may agree or disagree with your utopian concepts. I disagree.

“Free Staters” want to throw away speed limit signs. I do not want people screeching thru narrow, winding roads of my neighborhood like it was a Grand Prix track. I would feel unsafe walking my dog.

They want to eliminate public education leaving only two options: private school or home schooling. Sounds kinda’ like a 19th century kingdom or 21st century Afghanistan to me. Meanwhile, your founder Jason Sorens, continues his professorship at a New York State public university collecting a paycheck spearheaded by taxes.

“Free Staters” came to NH because we are a civil state with low crime rate. “Free Stater” libertarian thinking enacted “Stand Your Ground Law.” Now, if there are no witnesses, one can shoot to “murder,” claim they “felt threatened;” stood their ground! Makes me feel less safe in public spaces.

‘I vilify TWA or big business?’ Never! I vilify Carl Icahn and other vulture capitalists including Mitt Romney. Vilify Republicans? I do not believe “free stater libertarians” are “Republican” nor conservative.

Letter

To our constituents in Allenstown, Epsom, and Pittsfield:
The second constitutional question on the ballot this November 6 is: “Are you in favor of amending article 73-a of the second part of the constitution to read as follows: The chief justice of the supreme court shall be the administrative head of all the courts. The chief justice shall, with the concurrence of a majority of the supreme court justices, make rules governing the administration of all courts in the state and the practice and procedure to be followed in all such courts. The rules so promulgated shall have the force and effect of law. The legislature shall have a concurrent power to regulate the same matters by statute. In the event of a conflict between a statute and a court rule, the statute, if not otherwise contrary to this constitution, shall prevail over the rule.”

This restores legislative oversight of the operation of the court system, which was inadvertently removed when the constitution was amended in 1978 to allow the supreme court to write uniform rules for the courts. It is important because the court claims that its rules trump the laws of the state! The chief justice should not have law-making power, and this situation removes some of the vital checks and balances necessary for the three branches of government to work together.

The specific wording of this amendment was presented to the legislature by several justices of the supreme court, and approved by 2/3 of both the House and the Senate.

Vouchers to obtain a voter ID are now available at town offices. If any constituent needs to get one, but has problems getting to the license office, call us and we’ll make sure you get a ride.

Interested readers can email Carol for her newsletter, with more details than we can fit here.
