Letter
To my constituents in Allenstown, Epsom, and Pittsfield: There’s
been a lot of controversy about my minimum wage bill lately. I was
quoted as saying that young people aren’t worth the minimum wage.
That’s true, but incomplete: most aren’t worth it, not on account of
their age, but because they have no experience and often few skills.
A person of any age who is looking for his first job is not worth
very much to an employer, unless they have a specific skill and can
prove it. The more the employer has to pay such a person, and the
harder it is to fire him if he is unsuitable, the less willing the
employer will be to take a risk on a new hire.
Once teenagers
get that first job, and have proven that they’re worth it, they can
earn more, either with raises and promotions, or by changing
employers - it’s always easier to get a job if you already have one.
But they need to get into the system first, and a higher minimum
wage makes it harder to do so.
In the United States, teen
unemployment has increased steadily with the minimum wage; every 10%
increase in the minimum wage cuts youth employment by 3.2%. Youth
with specific skills (lifeguards or computer hackers, for example)
or connections (family or friends who run businesses) can get jobs,
but it’s very difficult for most others. Many entry level jobs that
used to require high school education now want a college degree,
making it harder to work one’s way through college.
I strongly
support everyone who wants to work being able to get a job and to be
paid what he’s worth, regardless of age.

Public Library
Liz Robinson, of Epsom, will present the first
adult program of the fall, “Beginning Couponing,” on Wednesday,
September 14, at 7:00 p.m. at the library. Liz began couponing
less than a year ago after observing some of her coworkers actively
pursuing the activity. She will present many ideas to
beginners, including such topics as where to get the coupons,
notable web sites, conducting a sample transaction, stockpiling, and
organizational tips. The program is definitely geared toward
beginners only. “The avid, experienced couponer is not going
to learn anything new,” Liz said.
The Book Club will meet on
Wednesday, September 21, at 7:00 p.m. to discuss HONOLULU, by Alan
Brennert. Anyone wishing to join in the discussion is invited
to pick up a copy of the book at the front desk of the library.
The Knitting Group meets every Tuesday evening at 6:30.
However, the group is not limited to knitters only. If you
enjoy quilting, crocheting, needlepoint, etc., perhaps you would
like to join the group for an evening of handwork and sociability.
