Letter
To my constituents in Allenstown, Epsom, and Pittsfield: Tuesday,
I started the day by supporting HB287, Representative Giuda’s bill,
to address the erosion and sediment migration in the Suncook River
since the 2006 avulsion. I cosponsored the bill, but the other
Representatives have been doing all the work on it. They presented
it to the Public Works Committee, and explained the damage the river
has done since it overflowed into the gravel pit.
My committee
heard HB444, making John Stark Day a state holiday. This bill
created a new holiday on the fourth Monday in April in honor of
General John Stark, a bit more serious than just a governor’s
proclamation. We’ll probably support it as long as it doesn’t
involve giving state employees a paid day off from work – we can’t
afford that! HB480, establishing a program for state licensing
of renovation, repair and painting contractors, in the name of
protecting children from lead paint, faced a lot of opposition. One
concern was that currently certified lead contractors tend to be
specialists. A lot of contractors, while aware of the dangers of
working with lead, aren’t themselves certified but hire specialists
when they have to deal with it. This program would require everyone
working on older buildings to get a license.
HB476, creating an
independent board of psychologists, was a long and intense hearing.
There are about 550 licensed psychologists in the state, of the 2300
or so professionals, of five disciplines, regulated by the Board of
Mental Health Practice. They seemed to feel that having a separate
board was professional validation, a sign of respect, rather than a
practical matter of ensuring the most fitting regulation.
Anyone
interested in what is going on in the State House is invited to
email or call me. Anyone who wants more information than I can fit
into a letter should email me for my newsletter.

Fire Department Auxiliary
The Epsom Fire Department Auxiliary has
been busy these last few months. September and November elections
saw a few of our very dedicated members spend the entire day
greeting all who turned out to vote, selling the cookbooks,
and Pizza Hut cards for our ongoing fundraiser. We deeply appreciate
all the Epsom residents who stopped by our table to show their
support for our continued efforts to obtain the needed updates for
the “Rapid Intervention Bag” for our firemen.
In November the
Auxiliary participated in the Bektash Shriners Fez-tival of trees.
The Shriners support 22 orthopedic and burn hospitals providing all
care and services to patients regardless of their ability to pay.
Our donation of a decorated tree was a huge success thanks to all
who donated items. Our tree looked awesome! Our theme for the
tree was “Safe home for the holidays.” We had everything from
a smoke detector, to toy fire engines, child proof items, puzzles,
coloring books, flashlights, first aid kit etc.
Special thanks to
all who spent their Friday evening setting everything up, Lori
Carignan, Roberta Brooks, Leigh-Ann French, Janet Porter and also
the superb help of four Pembroke Academy students; Jacob and Emma
from Pembroke, and Kiki and Matthew from Epsom. Those
students earned community service hours for their help. We look
forward to doing this again.
The Fire Auxiliary meets at 7pm on
the first Wednesday of each month at the Epsom Fire Station.
