How would you like to be a part of history? The Epsom Brass Band was formed in 1891 and is still functioning today! If you are a musician and are interested in being a part of an old-fashioned town band, we are looking for players. We routinely play a Memorial Day program followed by a parade, Old Home Days, and four concerts at Webster Park in Epsom. We also play the occasional extra concert if we get asked and are able. We are looking for all levels of ability on trumpet, trombone, alto horn, baritone horn and bass horn - either sousaphone or concert tuba. Also needed are wind and woodwind instruments - all saxes, clarinets and flutes. If you played in high school and want to get back into playing music, join us for practice on Friday nights at the Epsom Library. Rehearsals are from 7:30-9:00 PM on Friday evenings.

If you or someone you know would benefit from such an activity, come join us at our Friday rehearsals.

Letter

To my constituents in Allenstown, Epsom, & Pittsfield:
This Tuesday I had the pleasure of meeting a group of Epsom fourth graders on their visit to the State House. I couldn’t stay with them, because of conflicting committee meetings, but it was the highlight of my day.

Wednesday was a productive session. SB486, suspending the school building aid program for a year, passed 299-48. This was symbolic, since previously approved projects – including any voted in 2010 – would continue to be funded; but explosive growth in this program and the governor’s decision to bond makes a reassessment necessary. SB361, expanding benefits for part time judges, was killed. SB501, authorizing worksharing grants from the unemployment fund, passed without discussion, as did SB181, restoring liquor enforcement to the commission.

SB489, expanding gambling, was debated for almost 2 hours. It was killed 212-158; all four representatives from this district voted to kill it. SB490, allowing historical racing, was killed 236-113. Historical racing is a pari-mutuel betting machine that allows bets on one of 500,000 previous races; just how much it resembles a slot machine was the focus of the debate.

I was unsure of SB492, extending the property tax exemption for telephone poles, since there were good arguments on both sides. This “pole tax” has a long and complex history: currently telephone poles are exempt from local property taxes, while electric poles are not; on the other hand, the “communication services tax” only applies to landline phones. I finally decided to vote for it, reasoning that if I can’t make up my mind, it’s better not to make changes; the bill was killed 222-129.

Anyone interested in what’s going on at the State House is invited to email or call me; those who’d like a more detailed report than I can fit in The Sun should email me for my newsletter.

Katie and Erin Martel with a pile of trash they helped clean up along nearly a mile of River Road in Epsom for Earth Day with grandparents Jan and Eric Orff. Three big bags of trash, piles of bottles and cans, plus two tires were this year’s tally. The big difference in debris this year compared to previous ones were the numerous Dunkin Donut coffee cups and the tires.
