Christmas Bazaar

Our Lady of Lourdes and the St. Joseph Women’s Club will be holding their Annual Christmas Bazaar on Saturday, November 6th from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm in the parish hall in Northwood, NH. (Route 4, next to the town hall.)  There will be craft items, knitted goods, books, puzzles, a white elephant table with some brand new items, raffles, and a bake sale where you can purchase your homemade baked goods for Thanksgiving.  We will again have our ever popular cookie walk with some new and different varieties.  We will have morning muffins and coffee and will be offering a luncheon with some delicious choices.  Drop by for a visit, you will be glad you did.

The Pittsfield Area Senior Center has several special activities coming up early in November.  On Friday, November 5th, the Concord Regional VNA will be holding a Flu Shot Clinic from 10 am to noon.  This is a free clinic if you bring your Medicare/Medicaid, BC/BS or Harvard Pilgrim insurance card with you.  All others will need to pay $25.00.

On Monday, November 8th, there will be a Winter Wellness luncheon presentation by Jennifer Brechtel of the Concord Regional VNA.  This will also be the monthly birthday celebration.

On Tuesday, November 9th from 10 am to noon we invite you to come and help us create greeting cards.  Bring in cards you have received and no longer want.  We will cut, glue and stamp to make new cards.  The center needs to restock its supply of  “thinking of you/hope you are feeling better”  and “get well soon” cards.  Come and bring your old cards to help us create new cards.

Mark your calendar!  The Dorcas Guild of the First Congregational Church, 24 Main St., Pittsfield, is holding their annual Christmas Fair Saturday, November 20th from 9 am to 2 pm. There are many hand-fashioned items to choose from, as well as gourmet products, baked goods, “Unique Boutique” and the fabulous silent auction. Corn chowder and sandwich lunch is also available. Plan to be there for this handcraft bonanza!

Thanksgiving Is Here!
Maybe, Not Just Yet But It Is Coming Fast!

Please help Loudon Food Pantry make this a successful Thanksgiving Holiday for those who can’t make it happen for themselves and their families!

Last year we gave out 120 Thanksgiving Boxes.   (Please forgive my error in our last article.  I stated our estimate of 150 boxes.) This year we are estimating about 140 Thanksgiving Boxes will be going out.

We are handing out Thanksgiving Boxes the week of November 15, 2010.  We do this so our patrons have time to defrost their turkeys for the holiday.  Because we will be closed the week of November 22, 2010 our patrons will be given enough food for 10 days (which includes their holiday dinner).  Doing this puts an additional strain on pantry resources but we don’t want our patrons to go without food that week.

All donations that will be put into our Thanksgiving Boxes need to arrive at our pantry on or before Friday, November 12, 2010.  We are normally closed on Fridays but are making an exception due to the holiday.  If your donation is received after that date, we cannot guarantee that it will be used in a Thanksgiving Box.  Any donations not used in a Thanksgiving Box will be used for our normal distributions.

Items needed for our holiday boxes are:  Turkey (whole or breast), cranberry sauce, canned yams, turkey roasting pans, turkey stuffing (in the bird), boxed cakes and frostings, puddings & jello, canned turkey gravy, and rice.

The following items we are hoping to get fresh (if funds and donations allow) and need to be purchased during the week of November 12th to make sure they are in good condition for the boxes:  Apples, bananas, squash, carrots, onions, potatoes, and Brown & Serve Rolls.  If you can help with these items, please call us at (603) 724-9731 so we can make arrangements for pickup or delivery.

What food we don’t receive will need to be purchased.  We are short on funds and need donations to make this happen.  All donations, small and large, will be helpful and greatly appreciated.  Gift cards to Sam’s Club or Wal-Mart are great as well.

Donation and Contact Information
If you can help, please mail or drop off donations to: Loudon Food Pantry, 30 Chichester Rd., Unit D, Loudon, NH anytime Monday – Thursday between 10:00 AM and 5:00 PM.  Please make checks payable to Loudon Food Pantry.  If you cannot make it during these times, please call (603) 724-9731 to make alternate arrangements.

Food Drives

Are you planning a food drive for us?  Please call (603) 724-9731 and let us know.  We are servicing five towns out of three rooms and handing out food Monday – Thursday.  Letting us know in advance will allow us to be prepared to receive it – even if its on a Friday or Saturday.

Have you signed up for your Thanksgiving Box yet?
If you are eligible to receive food from Loudon Food Pantry, you qualify for a Thanksgiving Box.  But you need to sign up to receive it.  Don’t wait until the last minute to sign up.  Call (603) 724-9731 to make an appointment and sign up today.

Thank You!
We would like to take a moment to thank all of our volunteers and donors for all you have done.  All your help and hard work has allowed us to provide enough food for 51,522 meals in 2010 (so far).  Without you, this would not have been possible.

Letter

To my Constituents in Allenstown, Epsom, and Pittsfield:
As my final act of the 2009-10 legislature, the committee on municipal sprinkler mandates issued its report this week. It was finely nuanced, being generally pro-sprinkler but anti-mandate. The most useful information came from Salem, which instituted a sprinkler mandate recently. Salem is a large town, over 28,000 residents, with a large, full time fire service and city water in most areas of the town. Still, they experienced some significant problems after mandating sprinklers, most seriously with manufactured homes and private water systems. Manufactured homes must incorporate sprinklers at the factory, and not all purchasers wanted the extra cost. In addition, the existing parks had invested in other fire control measures but often could not support sprinklers.

The committee agreed that the most appropriate measures to take were educational: educate home builders and remodelers how to efficiently incorporate sprinklers, if customers wanted them, and educate planning boards on options to ensure fire safety. For example, new developments may require cisterns to provide water supplies and roads wide enough for fire trucks to turn around; sprinklers might be a cost-effective alternative system. One-size-fits-all mandates tend to suppress options that work better in some cases.

Anyone interested in what’s going on at the State House is invited to email or call me; those who’d like a more detailed report than I can fit in The Sun should email me for my newsletter.
Thank you for your vote!
