Another Day In The Life Of A Road Agent....
After less than two hours sleep, the police called with a tree or trees down
on Center Hill Road. It’s midnight, it’s raining, it’s 32° and everything is
coated with ice, and it’s dark.
With the headlights from the F-250, I cut trees while standing in water in
the ditch and later climbing on icy bankings. Got the trees off the road and
move on... By this time nearly every road has trees blocking the travel
ways.
At about 02:00 hours, Dave Fiorentino volunteers to help me, which I gladly
accepted. It’s a lot safer with two. We cut trees on New Rye, New Orchard
and North. At around 03:00 hours, Andrew Walton volunteered to help. I had
him do side roads like Chestnut Pond and Echo Valley Farm Roads.
At around 04:00 hours, I called in subcontractors to treat and scrape the
roads for the morning people and safety.
By 06:30 hours, we were like drowned rats soaked to the skin. Dave and
Andrew went to change and help other people. I changed and kept cutting
until 16:30 hours along the way we figured it was faster to have Dave pull
the tree or limb down and I reach overhead as high as I would and cut
letting it spring back up.
Sometime after 10 a.m., I had the plow guys grab their chain saws, giving
each a section of town. Using the plows as bulldozers, we pushed and cut our
way around town.
Walter Durack and his crew helped on Sanborn Hill. Others helped, but I
don’t know who they were. Thank you.
