To the Residents of Epsom: Our town has three State
maintained roads in it; Route 28, Route 4, and Blackhall Road. I
live adjacent to Blackhall Road and walk or run on this road on a
regular basis, sometimes alone, sometimes with my dog, and sometimes
with a stroller. I am constantly aware of the dangerous, speeding
traffic at various times of day. There is no time less dangerous
than another. I have tried going out at different times on different
days and there is no difference.
Last Friday, a very dear friend of mine, who until just recently
lived in Epsom, was struck by a car by a hit and run while she was
running near her new home in Florida. She passed away on Monday from
her injuries injuries. She was a single mother to five children,
ages 10 to 20.
Blackhall Road is a residential area with many families. Most
importantly, there are two elementary schools on this road. Many
children wait for buses directly on Blackhall Road, walk to school,
or ride their bikes. All of them have to watch out for the buses,
increased commuter traffic, and work trucks. And all of this
pedestrian traffic happens on a road where there are no sidewalks. I
can assure you that speed limits and blinking lights have little to
no effect on the traffic.
I have contacted our four State Representatives and our State
Senator and asked for help, and a response. I will share those with
you when I receive them.

I am writing to you on behalf of the Pembroke Academy Varsity
Hockey team.
The team began 10 years ago after the hard work and dedication
of many people involved. The teams’ booster club’s 5 members
and parents have worked very hard over the past several years and
raised thousands of dollars each year to offset the cost of what the
school does not pay for. This cost has been upwards of $16,000
a year. All past family members have purchased each of their
own player’s equipment from helmet to skates and everything in
between.
After the 2008/2009 season Pembroke Academy said goodbye to 7 of
their players, who graduated, leaving the team short players for
this coming year. With that and without a feeder program this has
led to the need to find ways to assist new potential players who
have not been afforded the opportunity in the past to play hockey
due to the expense of the equipment. We also must purchase
more expensive ice time for the players to eliminate the 5:30 a.m.
practices before school. This too is an increased, but
necessary, expense to the hockey team in order to make playing
hockey more feasible for those who want to be part of our team.
The booster club is looking for donations of new and used hockey
equipment or monetary donations to purchase equipment for these new
players to ease the cost for families.
This is where you as a community member come in. Please
consider becoming a Pembroke Hockey partner!
If
you have equipment you wish to donate please call Cheryl at 491-5955
and we will make arrangements to pick it up.
We thank you, in advance, for your consideration in supporting
the Pembroke Academy Varsity Hockey team.
Sincerely, Cheryl C. Gilpatrick Booster Club President
