Happy Birthday to Aja Davison on January 23 and Isaac Jarvis on

The filing period for Town and School District officers is January
21 to January 30, 2015. File for School District office with
Michelle Plunkett, School District Clerk. File for Town office with
Evelyn Pike, Town Clerk. Wouldn’t it be fine to have some choice on
the ballot in March this year?

Chichester Town Library News
The recent presentation of “A Winter’s Tale” by the Pontine Theater
was enjoyed by a hearty group of residents. The Library thanks all
who attended and all who brought homemade desserts and other
delights that were enjoyed by everyone after the play. Also, the
Library has a copy of the book by Maine author Sarah Orne Jewett,
for anyone who missed the play and/or would like an enjoyable winter
read.
A Chichester event tonight at 7 p.m. at the Grange Hall is the
special presentation, “New Hampshire’s Grange Movement: Its Rise,
Triumphs and Decline,” by Steve Taylor. For those interested in New
England history, agriculture or have a curiosity about the Grange,
this is a “not to miss” event.
Pre-school Story and Craft “Hour” will be held on January 22nd at
10:30 a.m. Enjoy a special time with your young one(s) at the
Library.
If you haven’t stopped by the Library to see the works of Brad
Towle, please do so. There will be a reception honoring Brad this
Friday, the 23rd, from 6-8 p.m. Come in and meet this artist of
photography, as well as enjoy a bit of a treat on a winter’s
evening.
Our freedoms are very important to us and one way the
Library acknowledges these efforts and sacrifices by our deployed
military personnel and local veterans is by making and sending
Valentine’s Day cards. This family activity is scheduled for the
morning of Saturday, January 24th this year. If you know
of military personnel currently deployed or of a veteran(s) who
would enjoy receiving a valentine, please provide their names and
addresses to the Library at
[email protected] or by messaging the
Library on Face Book or by mail/phone call as soon as possible. We
hope to see residents, young and old, at the Library to participate
in this.
The Chichester Photography Group will be meeting on Monday, January
26th at 7 p.m. This group is open to any and all local photographers
who are interested in discussing their craft and planning group
events.
The Down Cellar Writers’ Group is also meeting on Monday, Jan. 26th
at 7 p.m. Local writers and poets are welcome to bring and share
their work.
The next Teen Advisory Meeting is meeting on Saturday, the 31st at
10 a.m. The group will be practicing with the new movie camera
recently purchased through the generous bequest of John and Doris
Saturley. The camera will be used to document interviews and
stories of our older residents whose memories will be preserved for
the education and enjoyment of future generations. We learn from
the past, and what better way than through one-on-one experiences.
Letter To The Editor
Chichester Athletics
I’m writing to inform you of a proposal our current athletic
director is putting forward in the upcoming teachers’ contract
regarding the CCS basketball program.
The proposal would eliminate the boys and girls 5th / 6th grade
teams. The 5th graders would not have a school team to play on and
the 6th graders would be combined with the 7/8th grade team. It
would still be a no cut program.
The program is wrapped up in the teachers’ contract due to coaching
stipends. The argument for cutting the 5/6 team is of course money.
More money is spent on basketball then soccer. This is an apples
and oranges comparison. More children are involved in the
basketball program and the basketball season is almost twice as long
as the soccer season.
Over the last 6+ years the program has seen great improvement and
growth. The interest and participation in basketball has increased
over the last few years to the point that we have had to expand to
the Merrimack League to insure that the kids get opportunity and
playing time. In addition in the last 3 years 18 Chichester
students went on to play high school basketball.
The 5th/6th grade team serves a purpose in introducing the young
player to game play, skill development etc. that is on level with
their physical and emotional development. Playing on a team that
suits the child’s development allows them to develop confidence,
teamwork, trust etc.
Putting 6th graders with the 7/8th graders on the basketball court
is not in the best interest of most of those players, there is
physical differences between 6th & 8th grade kid.
In my personal experience, had it not been for the 5th/6th grade
team my freshman daughter would not be playing high school ball.
