Old Home Day fliers are out and can be found at places around town.
More will be available at Carpenter Park on August 15 and 16.
Chichester Old Home Day begins on Friday, August 15, at 3 p.m. with
booth and exhibit set-up at Carpenter Park. If anyone would like to
show off an antique car and visit with other car enthusiasts, come
to the park between 5:30 and 6:00 and park in the upper parking lot.
Craig Kendall and the Northwoods Playboys will be providing music
from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Friday, August 15, at Carpenter Park. The
Chichester Fire Association will be selling French fries, soft
drinks, and water; and perhaps other food vendors will be present.
The Bean-Hole Beans go into the ground sometime between 6 and 7 p.m.
Come see how it is done and possibly provide a little muscle or
shovel power for a few minutes.
The Old Home Day Fireworks will begin at 8:45 p.m. on Friday, August
15. (Rain date will be August 16 at 8:45 p.m.) Park in the field at
the corner of Route 28 and Bear Hill Road. Bring a lawn chair or
blanket and enjoy.
The Old Home Day Parade will form at Chichester Central School at
9:30 a.m. on Saturday, August 16, and step out at 10:30 a.m. The
theme this year is “Wide World of Sports.” The parade route goes
along Main Street, turns left onto Route 4, and proceeds past
Frekey’s Ice Cream onto Carpenter Road. Route 4 will be narrowed
while the parade passes. Motorists, please take note.
From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. there will be a Farmer’s Market, Exhibits,
Vendors, and Children’s Activities near the pavilion at Carpenter
Park. Bean Hole Beans and other “fixings” will be served starting at
noon. Don Smith will provide music between 12:30 and 1:30 p.m.
Chichester Grange will meet on Wednesday, August 20, at 7 p.m.
upstairs in the Grange Hall.
Chichester Town Library News
Old Home Day is here! The Library will be closed on Saturday,
August 14th, but you can find our Librarian, Lisa, and Library Aide,
Kayla, right in the middle of things at Carpenter Park. They’ll
have tee shirts identifying them, so don’t hesitate to go up and
meet them. Remember, they are a fount of knowledge and great
people.
Because of Old Home Day, the monthly used book sale will be held on
August 23rd, where there will be a reduction in the already “cheap”
price of Danielle Steele’s books and a focus on the books of Sandra
Brown and John Grisham. Also, some of the older fiction books will
be stacked and tied in ribbon for the purchases use as decoration in
the personal libraries and homes.
On August 18th at 6:30 p.m., the last program and event for
participants of the Summer Reading Program will be held at the
Library. The amazing science of Fibonacci numbers/sequences will be
explored. It is more than just a sequence of numbers, inasmuch as
it has also been described as “nature’s numbering system.” In
addition, there will be ice cream and the readers’ raffle drawings.
Wednesday, August 20th at 3 p.m. brings another family movie matinee
for everyone’s enjoyment. Mary Poppins will be shown in the cool of
the community meeting room, while free popcorn will be available to
bring everyone that movie theater ambience.
Also on Wednesday, the Library is hosting a teen pizza party at 5
p.m. This will provide an opportunity for teens to let us know what
programs and activities they would be interested in having. Please
encourage your teens and their friends to come. It’s a great way to
shape a program just for them.
Time is dwindling for the opportunity to buy raffle tickets on the
hybrid bicycles. Come in soon!
Lucille’s Discoveries At The Chichester Town Library
Earlier this year, we introduced you to the world of “Lucille’s
Discoveries” at the Chichester Town Library. We thought it time to
give you a taste of what you might find, if you haven’t already
explored this area of the Down Under section of the Library. Most of
these books are truly unique and not available in the general
market—at least not in some of their original publication forms.
There are a number of collectible children’s books which adults can
enjoy all over again, as they read them to their children and/or
grandchildren. There are also older Bobbsey Twin books to whet the
imaginations of the younger crowd, as well. And, if you want to
take a longer trek back in time, Lucille’s Discoveries even has some
early school text books.
If you are interested in genealogy, there is a collection of “The
New England Historical and Genealogical Register,” dating from 1997
to 2006, which has been priced at only $5 for all twenty-nine
volumes. In the same vein, i.e., research with a local flare, there
are also regional and local area books, including Concord and
Penacook phone directories.
Still focusing on “local,” this time a local author, the book The
Same Ax, Twice, by Howard Mansfield is available to those interested
in history, preservation and architecture. Also, with Canterbury
Village just down the road, readers and artisans alike might enjoy
By Shaker Hands, written by June Sprigg. A 1990 publication, this
book provides a look at the art and world of the Shakers--their
furniture and artifacts--and the thoughts and beliefs that inspired
them.
Elbert Hubbard’s Scrapbook, published in 1923 after the author’s
death, is a collection of more than seven hundred quotations that
were Hubbard’s favored sayings and have been described as having
meant to inspire genius. Mr. Hubbard, 1856- 1915, although known as
a writer, publisher, artist and philosopher, may have been most
remembered for his founding of the Roycroft, an arts and craft
movement community known somewhat for being free-thinkers, radicals,
reformers and suffragists. It would make a great addition to a
private library and a wonderful conversation-starter.
Chichester Central School News
Submitted By Brian Beaverstock, Principal
On behalf of the teachers and entire staff at Chichester Central
School, we hope you have had a safe and rejuvenating summer. We are
looking forward to welcoming back all of our students for the
2014-2015 school year. The classrooms are in order, hallways are
getting waxed and ready, and the teaching staff is gearing up for
another exciting year of learning and growing together with our
students. We have many outstanding educators and support staff
joining our school community this year as well as some familiar
staff members taking on new roles. At this point, all students
should have received a “welcome back” letter from their homeroom
teacher which listed the necessary supplies for the start of the
year. You can find these letters on our ‘new look’ school website
in case you misplaced yours.
Believe it or not, but August 27 is the first day of school!
Parents who are dropping off are asked to do so as close to 8:10 AM
as possible as students may begin entering their homeroom at 8:15.
Please make sure to check the bus routes for updated pick up times.
Students should be at their designated stop at least 10 minutes
before their scheduled time in the first week so we can all gauge
their pick-up time appropriately. There is still time for parents
who would like to have their children use the New Morning Childcare
program to register. This program provides care for students of
Chichester Central School before school beginning at 7 AM and after
school until 5:45 PM. Parents and families may call the New Morning
program at 669-3591 for more information.
The lunch price for this year will remain $2.50; $3.50 for adults
wishing to enjoy a fine meal in the middle of the day. More
information including our school lunch menu will be posted on our
website.
Incoming kindergartners are invited to ride the bus to school on
Tuesday, August 26. The bus will leave the town hall at 9:00 (AM
class) and 10:00 (PM class) and students with a parent will be
greeted at the school. After a 45-minute stay to get acquainted,
the bus will return to the town offices. All incoming first grade
students may visit their classroom from 11-11:45 AM on that same
day. The PTO will be hosting the Back to School Barbecue on
Wednesday, September 10 at 5:00 PM. Carpooling for the event is
strongly suggested as there is limited parking at the school. After
everyone is well fed, families are encouraged to meet the teachers
and tour the school as part of the annual Open House.
As the new Principal, I am excited about meeting all the students
and families of Chichester and am looking forward to a great year of
learning as a community at CCS. Students in grades 4-8, be sure to
read your summer reading book and enjoy what remains of the summer!
