Please consider attending the annual Memorial Day observance on Friday, May 30, at 7 p.m. at the Town/Grange Hall. The traditional date for Memorial Day has been chosen so as not to compete with celebrations on May 26 in surrounding towns. The event is organized by Chichester Grange with the assistance of the Historical Society. There will be a brief ceremony in the parking lot near the memorial stone and the flagpole which will be followed by a short program inside the building.

We received a very generous number of ladies pants. We can offer them B1G1 Free!!!

We also received some wonderful scrubs; tops & bottoms, excellent condition. Thank you to both wonderful donors!  We do appreciate everyone’s support: two young boys were great helpers, throwing in big bags of clothes they outgrew. We will gladly accept things left over from the Town Wide Yard Sale, if you don’t want to bring it back inside and it’s too good to dump, please think of us.

Chichester Town Library News

The Library welcomes Kayla Chagnon to the staff as a Library Aide.  Please, come in to meet and welcome her.  She is a valuable addition for Librarian Lisa Prizio and all who work with and use the Library.

The Down Cellar Writers’ Group will be meeting on Monday, June 2nd at 7 p.m.  Local poets and writers and those who aspire to become poets and writers are welcome to bring and share their work in this comfortable environment.

The Library will be having two used book sales in June.  The first is in recognition of the June 7th, town-wide yard sale.  The Library will be combining this sale with the annual plant sale, the latter being a favorite of gardeners.  The plant sale, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., always has an excellent selection of perennial plants and shrubs, including blueberries, beach roses, lilacs and more! Gardeners have had excellent growing results with their chosen plants.

The second used book sale will be June 21st, as originally scheduled.

For the June raffle, the Library has received generous donations of antique, toy cars and a book, as well as a gift certificate to the Longhorn Steakhouse.  What a great Father’s Day gift, although a bit belated.  Come in to see these unique raffle items.

In addition, there will be summer raffles of two, respective bicycles.  These 700c Schwinn Seventh Avenue Hybrid Bikes are each worth over $200.00.  One is designed for women, the other for men, and are appropriate for fifteen year old riders and older. Each has 21 speeds and an aluminum, low-standover frame. These bikes are great for both street riding and bike paths.  The raffle tickets will cost a bit more than usual, in recognition of the bikes’ values, but will still be “pocket change.”  This may be the perfect gift for someone getting into fitness, enjoying a new recreational activity and/or going off to college!  What an opportunity!

New Books At The Chichester Town Library

There is a new series of books out for young people, ages 8-10, all published earlier this year.  The Dream It, Do It! books explore a variety of themes to help the reader take action on an interest, or dream, to bring it to reality.  Although good activities for any time of year, they are prime for the summer months when the dreamers/doers have more time to indulge in their interests.  The Library has purchased three of the books from the series.

Get Writing!, by Charlotte Guillain, provides the reader with helpful tips for finding inspiration, keeping an ideas journal and thinking creatively.  An activity at the end of the book encourages readers to make a finished book to share with friends.

Get Filming!, by Mary Colson, maps out steps to help make the reader’s dreams of filmmaking come true. Where does a filmmaker find inspiration?  How do they write the right script?  And, how do they think creatively about camera angles?  These topics are all covered in this book.   An activity at the end of the book encourages readers to make a story board for a film.

Get Inventing!, also by Mary Colson, teaches readers how to take their dreams about becoming an inventor and make them come true. Helpful tips for finding inspiration, keeping an ideas journal and always thinking about how to improve things will help the reader start to invent in no time.  An activity at the end of the book encourages readers to invent their own board game and test it out.

Letter To The Editor

There are two billion moms in the world.  May 11th was Mother’s Day in the United States - some mothers awoke to breakfast, some enjoyed lunch or a special dinner, those in hospitals/care facilities  were visited by their families.  Though billions of dollars are spent on gifts and cards, most mothers enjoy handmade gifts and time with their children, of all ages.

Yet more the norm, millions of mothers were at work!  While honoring them in NH, mothers were working at chain clothing/department stores; attractions, hotels/motels; fast food chains, coffee shops, cafés and restaurants, waiting on other mothers celebrating their day.  Most mothers work those minimum wage jobs, unable to take the day off as they do not make enough money to support their children.

SHAME on NH’s REPUBLICAN SENATORS for their disgraceful behavior!  It is dishonorable, scandalous that the NH Senate voted to kill the minimum wage increase.  Straight down party lines, Senators voted 13-11 to kill the minimum wage bill that would have helped 76,000 Granite Staters.

Senate Republicans have again voted against the best interests of NH citizens, who will remember these Senators at election time. NH voting constituents will remember these insensitive Republicans.  All NH residents deserve a living wage, comparable to other states; and they will vote for those who best serve NH.

How appalling that people continue to work so hard for so little money!  Seniors collecting Social Security still have to work other jobs to pay for housing, food, medications and property taxes. Further, young people who cannot afford to rent an apartment/house remain with their parents, many of whom are already struggling.  Do these Senators not care about the 21,000 NH children this bill would have helped?  Hmm, some Happy Mother’s Day…all of us must remember these Senators at election time!
