World Book Night At The Chichester Town Library

The Chichester Town Library is helping to celebrate World Book Night on Wednesday, April 23rd, at 6:30 p.m. with an Open House and a book giveaway.  World Book Night is an effort to spread the love of reading, person to person.  The Open House will include refreshments and twenty new copies of the selected book will be given to interested attendees over the age of sixteen.  Book marks will be distributed with the books, with a request for comments on the book.  Readers who return the book mark with a review will be able to choose a regularly priced book from the “Down Under” section of the Library.

This effort for Chichester has been spearheaded by volunteers Jimmy and Barbara Pappas.  The book was selected from a list of 30-35 books chosen by an independent panel of librarians and booksellers. The authors of the books waive their royalties and the publishers agree to pay the costs of producing the specially-printed World Book Night U.S. editions—all for spreading the love of reading.

The Library will also have personnel available to explain how to download an e-book and/or assist with downloading an e-book, if requested.   If you haven’t been to the Chichester Library in a while, this would be a great time to stop in.

Chichester Heritage Commission Hosts

NH Preservation Alliance Program

Did you know that 89 towns now offer tax reductions to owners of historic barns who agree to maintain these structures? That owners who make new investments in preserving their historic homes or commercial properties, including energy improvements, could be eligible for tax credits? Or that preservation easements can help protect buildings in the same way that conservation easements protect land?

The New Hampshire Preservation Alliance is offering a FREE information session on these topics on Thursday, April 24 at the Chichester Grange Hall, 54 Main Street. The presentation begins at 7 pm. The Chichester Heritage Commission is sponsoring the talk. Refreshments will be provided by the Heritage Commission. To register, contact the Preservation Alliance at 224-2281 or [email protected].

The Preservation Alliance, a statewide non-profit membership organization, will give an illustrated talk about the preservation tools known as RSA 79- D and RSA 79-E , and present a range of options for easement programs where a town, a Heritage Commission, or another entity purchases or is gifted certain rights to a property .

They will also share their experience with the use of these incentives and present examples of how historic buildings and features can be protected through easements.

There will be plenty of time for audience questions, and informational hand-outs will be provided. Copies of the Alliance’s handbook, Preserving Community Character, will also be available for purchase.

For additional information, call the NH Preservation Alliance at 224-2281 or the Chichester Heritage Commission at 798-5709.

Chichester Grange

Chichester Grange met at the Grange Hall on Wednesday, April 2. The meeting was called to order by Master Kevin Belval. The Charter was draped in memory of Leonard Gould. Resolutions will be written and sent to his widow in Florida.

Members made plans for the Penny Sale and Chocolate Extravaganza to be held on Saturday, April 12. They also planned to host The Agate Past Masters’ Association on the same day. Planning has begun for the Awards Night on May 7th and the Memorial Day Celebration on May 30th. Plans for clean-up and flowers at Memorial Park will wait until the snow has melted.

As it was Youth Night, the program was presented by Hannah West. Members practiced balloting in preparation for a visit from the State Grange Deputy on April 16. They also participated in a Grange trivia quiz. Because the first week in April is Children’s Book Week, members each shared a favorite children’s book title.

At the close of the meeting members enjoyed refreshments provided by Kevin Belval.
