Chichester Town Library News
The September Art Exhibit at the Chichester Town Library features
paintings by Jean Elliot, Nancy Aguiar and Eleanor Corliss.
Jean, a New Hampshire native, reportedly began drawing at two years
of age and was awarded an introductory scholarship to the Boston
Museum of Fine Arts at age 16. Subjects of her paintings have
ranged from her children and friends to local scenes and landscapes.
With works in private collections from New Hampshire to California,
Jean’s media have included oils, acrylics, pastels and watercolors.
Nanci Aguiar works in watercolors and likens her paintings to
another form of poetry. Nanci spent a career as a nurse in the
field of geriatrics. Her artistic vein has included poetry, which
has been published, as well as her watercolors.
Eleanor Corliss is the “senior” artist of the exhibitors, at
ninety-three years of age. She and Nanci became friends when they
discovered a shared love of poetry. Through this commonality they
learned that each also enjoyed painting. Eleanor, now a resident of
Merrimack County Nursing Home, has still been able to take art
classes with Nanci providing the transportation.
The public is invited to view this art through the month at the
Library and to attend the Artist’s Reception on Saturday, September
14th from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm.
The September Used Book Sale will be held on September 14th from 8
am - 1 pm in the “Down Under” used book area of the Library. There
are always new choices from which to select a book or look for a
favorite author.
On September 20th, the Library will be bringing a program from the
New Hampshire Humanities Council to the Chichester Grange Hall at 54
Main Street. Jeff Warner will be presenting “Music in my Pockets:
Family Fun in Folk Music.” Singing games, accessible “pocket
instruments” like spoons and dancing puppets, tall tales, funny
songs, old songs and songs kids teach each other in the playground
are all traditional in that they have been passed down the
generations by word of mouth. They will all be seen, heard and
learned as Jeff visits 1850 or 1910 in a New England town, with
families gathered around the figurative hearth, participating in
timeless, hearty entertainment and, almost without the audience
knowing it, teaches how America amused itself before electricity.
Chichester Grange
Chichester Grange met on Wednesday, September 4, upstairs in the
Grange Hall. The Fair Committee proudly announced that Chichester
Grange’s theme exhibit had won a blue ribbon and a one hundred
dollar premium at the Hopkinton Fair. Chichester will also exhibit
at Deerfield Fair in the Grange and Community Building at the end of
September.
Plans for the Penny Sale on November 2 are progressing. A lunch of
soup and rolls will be offered, and a wider advertising base was
discussed.
Now that school is open it is time to think about dictionaries
again. Chichester Grange will obtain enrollment numbers, contact
sponsors, order the books, and present dictionaries to third graders
in Chichester, Epsom, Barnstead, and Northwood schools.
With the State Grange annual meeting coming up at the end of
October, it is time to send in reports and to assemble the many
items that are brought each year to be donated to Grange charities
at the state level. The Secretary will e-mail a list to all members
and items may be brought to the next three meetings.
For the program section of the meeting members walked through
sections of the Third Degree. Then Anne Boisvert and Mary West
presented a slide show of the West/Boisvert trip to Minnesota in
July.
After the meeting closed, members enjoyed refreshments provided by
Ruth Hammen, which included a delicious blueberry cake. The next
meeting, September 18, will begin with a pot luck supper at 6 pm.
