Chichester Central Graduation

Chichester Central School’s eighth grade graduation took place on June 19 in a multi-purpose room beautifully decorated with plants loaned by Millican Nurseries and a poster for each of the 35 graduates.

Led by seventh grade class marshals Berry Jane Weir and Delanie St. Laurent and followed by flag bearers Justin and Tyler Smith, the graduating class marched in to “Pomp and Circumstance” played by Joey Edmonds on the piano.

Justin Colby led the Pledge of Allegiance and class president, Patrick Cavanaugh, gave a brief speech of welcome. Sierra Ardine and Kendra Letendre performed a vocal duet, and Nicholas Hanna gave a Commencement Address with the theme of “Do Not Let Your Hearts and Minds Go to Sleep.” The class officers then announced that their class had purchased several clocks for the school that will show different time zones from around the world.

The graduating class moved off the stage for two video presentations. Each year the Social Studies class does a video reenactment of an event in history. This year it was the Viet Nam War. Somehow the outdoor classroom was turned into a tropical swamp as students in camouflage waded with rifles held over their heads. These scenes were interspersed with scenes of students in flower-power costumes, carrying protest and peace signs. The second video was the traditional photo salute to the graduates prepared by Mrs. Kate Dockham.

Principal Pamela Stiles then came to the podium for the Awards Presentation. She spoke of a class that was serious about their studies, progressing from 33 percent proficiency in mathematics in grade 3 to 95 percent proficiency in grade 8. She described the students as kind and mature with a low incidence of office referrals for behavioral reasons. She then presented the Kempton Ricker Award to Justin McCrea, the Irene Ricker Award to Patrick Cavanaugh and Alise Friel, the Chris Thomas Award to Ryley Marston, and the Michael Booth Award to Nicholas Hanna. Fourteen students were recognized for scores above the national average in the Scholastic Challenge Test, and Meghan Hubbard was given a trophy for achieving the highest score of an 8th grade student in New Hampshire.

Commander Todd Connor of the American Legion Post 112 in Epsom presented the American Legion Medal for Citizenship to Jeremy Bates and Meghan Hubbard. Then he gave prizes to Cierra Labbe (first place) and Meghan Hubbard and Sierra Ardine (second place) for their Memorial Day essays on Abraham Lincoln. Mrs. Sally Kelly, Chair of the School Board, gave the Sue Williams Award to Kennis Barker. DAR Regent Ann Hasbany presented the DAR Youth Citizenship Award to Jackson Tingley. Killian Drouse and Sierra Ardine received PTO Awards from Mrs. Heather Chiavaras. Mrs. Bea Douglas gave the Mike Pszonowsky Award to Kim Turner.

The A. Allan Clark-Frieda Jones Award for Outstanding Volunteer Service was given to Heather Chiavaras of the Chichester PTO. High School student Haley Chevrette was the recipient of the Sanborn Scholarship.

School Board Chair Sally Kelly and Principal Pamela Stiles then presented diplomas to Hunter Allen, Sierra Ardine, Kennis Barker, Jeremy Bates, Alexandra Biron, Aaron Bond, David Browall, Patrick Cavanaugh, Brianna Collins, John Daniels, Killian Drouse, Alise Friel, David Hammond, Christian Hanna, Nicholas Hanna, Meghan Hubbard, T. J. Hubbard, Colby Justin, Ciara Labbe, Corey Lavery, Kendra Letendre, Ryley Marston, Justin McCrea, Eric Merrill, Macie Miller, Moses Murenzi, Julie Nadeau, Hunter Preve, Devyn Ricker, Jackson Tingley, Jessica Tolento, Kimberlyn Turner, Damien Wells, Veronica White, and Emma York.

After singing “Farewell to Chichester” the graduates stepped briskly off the stage to “Skyfall” by Adele, a song of their choice. Refreshments for all were served by the parents of the seventh grade class.
