Happy Birthday on February 16 to Heather Duford and Kendra Jarvis.

It’s time to mark your calendars for the Town governance meetings in March. The School District Meeting will be Saturday, March 9. Town Meeting will be Saturday, March 16. Voting Day for School District and Town officials will be in between the two meetings on Tuesday, March 12. Voting is held at the Town Hall on the Main Street level. School District Meeting and Town Meeting are both held at Chichester Central School.

Chichester Grange meets only once in February. The next Grange meeting will be on March 6.

It is hard to picture summer at this time of year, but Old Home Day is scheduled for August 17. This year’s theme is “Happy Birthday, Carpenter Park!” The land for Carpenter Park was given to the town in 1963, so 2013 is the 50th anniversary of that event. The Happy Birthday theme was chosen to make it easy to plan floats for the parade and events for the park on Old Home Day. Why not plan your float for the parade as you watch the snow fall outside.

Pembroke Junior Spartans have scheduled their first official sign up date for the 2013 football and cheerleading season on March 3, 2013 at the Pembroke Town Library from 10:00 a.m. to noon for all kids from Chichester, Epsom, Allenstown, Pembroke and Hooksett.  Grades 5 through 8 are eligible to participate. Registration will be ongoing. Further registration dates and times will be scheduled. For more information or to print a registration form, please go to www.pfof.org or contact Lisa Wiggin at (603) 219-3179.

Chichester Grange News

Chichester Grange met at the Grange Hall on February 6th. Members draped the Charter in loving memory of Ed Wladkowski. A committee of Carolee Davison, Hannah West, and Mary West was appointed to write resolutions in his memory.

Reports were given on a small but successful gathering on January 23rd for the purpose of questions from the public about Town government in Chichester. Nancy Tanner and Jamie Pike were present from the Town office to answer questions. The Chichester Library cosponsored this event. The group was small, but the questions were excellent.

The State Grange February Youth Rally was held on February 2nd in Hooksett. Fifty people were present for the evening meeting, and others were present earlier in the day to participate in service projects and other activities such as the Grange Knowledge Test. Members of Watatic Grange served two delicious meals and provided snacks as well.

Thank-you notes from the third graders at Northwood School were read and enjoyed. The youngsters were very happy to receive dictionaries in January, a gift from Chichester Grange and the Epsom Circle Restaurant as part of The Dictionary Project. Members voted to purchase dictionaries for Barnstead School this year as their previous sponsor has stepped back from the project.

Plans were started for a spring theme Penny Sale to be held in April. Members were delighted to receive a donation from the Foss Family Foundation. Mr. Foss, a member of Catamount Grange in Pittsfield before it merged with Chichester Grange, has been very generous to Chichester Grange and the Grange is very appreciative.

The program was Show and Tell. Members shared items appropriate to February: a heart-shaped locket, an Avon bottle shaped like a bust of Lincoln, a singing Mickey Mouse toy holding a valentine, a stuffed animal “the lemur of love,” two valentine cards, and a bear with a valentine balloon. In the inventions category there were two original pieces of counted cross stitch and a collection of coupon dispensers. Master Kevin Belval advertised the Concord Players’ production of “Boeing, Boeing” which will take place on February 15-17 at the Concord City Auditorium.

Following the meeting members enjoyed refreshments provided by Carolee Davison. The next meeting will be March 6, as Chichester Grange meets only once during February.

TDS Customers Caught In Voice Phishing Scam

TDS Telecommunications Corp. (TDS®) customers have reported receiving voice phishing calls. These calls are fraudulent attempts to scam TDS customers into revealing sensitive account information. People should be extra cautious of any phone call requests to verify account information.

Voice phishing or “vishing” scams have become increasingly sophisticated. While people have become smarter about other phishing scams, so have criminals. They are switching tactics and using a form of communication that people trust—the phone.

Vishing typically begins with an automated phone call. The recording warns of fraudulent account activity on the persons account and directs them to call a toll-free or local number immediately. At this time, they are asked a series of questions about personal and account information.

Customers should be aware that TDS is not placing these calls. TDS will never contact customers directly to verify account information. In fact, legitimate businesses do not contact customers to “verify” or “update” account information.

To protect against phishing attempts, TDS advises customers:

When receiving a message or email requesting a return call, do not use the number provided or that appears on caller ID—it may be fake. Instead, use the company’s phone number listed in the phone book or on your bill.

If contacted via email, do not follow any included links. Even if they look real, the link could take you to a counterfeit website.

If someone calls offering to check the computer by logging in remotely, hang up immediately. Do not allow anyone remote access to a home computer unless you’ve initiated the call.

For more information on phishing and tips for prevention, visit the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission web site, www.sec.gov/investor/pubs/phishing.htm.

Local Town Firefighters Train For Ice Rescue

Concord Firefighters Troy Ward, Justin Tracy, Kevin O’Donnell, Riley Northrop of Chichester Fire/Rescue Department and Miranda Mulcahy of Barnstead Fire-Rescue joined over forty firefighters from departments from across the state for an ice rescue training program.

More residents and visitors to the state are enjoying ice sports in the state and that requires firefighters to be prepared for a needed rescue day or night. The training was conducted at Lake Sunapee and Half Moon Pond in Barnstead over the weekend of February 2nd and 3rd.

Training included work on ice and in the water giving firefighters the skills necessary to mitigate an ice rescue or cold water incident. Topics included rescuer and team safety, pre-planning, personal protective equipment, patient packaging and recovery, operating specialized equipment, and self-rescue.

Participants trained to develop and implement procedures for recognizing the unique hazards associated with ice rescue, identifying ice characteristics, the operation of  surface support equipment used in water or ice rescue operations, recognizing and dealing with a victim’s hypothermia  and the safe entry and exit of divers into the water through an ice hole.

The training was conducted by the New Hampshire Fire Academy to increase the capability of New Hampshire’s fire and emergency services through research and the application of the best methodologies, techniques, education and practice of fire and emergency medical services.
