Local food pantries, including Chichester, are very low on stock to distribute. If you are able to share with the less fortunate, now would be a good time to reach out. Non-perishable food items and necessities like toilet paper, shampoo, and toothpaste may be brought to the Town Office during open hours. Donations of money are also gratefully accepted.

The Chichester Old Home Day Committee will meet on Thursday, October 10, at 7 p.m. at the Fire Station.

This is your last chance to suggest a theme for Chichester Old Home Day 2014. The theme is used in decorating floats for the parade and sometimes to suggest events at Carpenter Park. Contact Hannah West at 798-5783 or [email protected]. You may also contact any other member of the Old Home Day Committee. A couple of themes have been suggested, and the committee plans to set a theme at the October 10 meeting.

Chichester Grange will meet on Wednesday, October 16, upstairs in the Grange Hall at 7 p.m.

If you are interested in Trunk or Treating, it will be happening at Carpenter Park this year on Sunday, October 27, from 5-6:30 p.m.

Chichester Grange is planning a Christmas-themed Penny Sale on Saturday, November 2, at the Grange Hall. Proceeds will benefit the Heritage Commission’s One Pane at a Time project. We need 4 ply yarn for a lady who knits hats for cancer patients at area hospitals for Christmas. She would really like to start knitting now.  If you do donate yarn for the project, please label the bag “knit hats” so we know who to give it to.

Chichester Library News

We have some great new DVD’s!  For kids, “Wreck it Ralph;” “Epic” (which was enjoyed by the winners of the summer reading program) “The Croods” and for adults “42” the Jackie Robinson story.

Please remember, we do not charge late fees in exchange for canned goods or paper goods for the Chichester Food Pantry.  Their supplies are very low at this time.  Even if you do not have a book or DVD that is late, you can still drop off items for the food pantry at the library.  We will deliver to the food pantry.

There is a lot going on in October-stop by for an update (including building fairy houses at Carpenter Park!) or check the town website: www.Chichesternh.org for all the latest library news/calendar!

Chichester Town Library News

The Library continues to see good participation in the broad spectrum of activities that have been hosted.  In that regard, it continues to plan to serve the various interests of the community.

There is a “raffle” for October to November 25th which will consist of a homemade pumpkin pie, a homemade apple pie, colorful stuffed turkey and Thanksgiving napkins.  Now that should take some of the baking and decorating burdens off of the lucky winner’s shoulders!

On display at the Chichester Town Library during the month of October is a selection of oil paintings by Lena “Billie” Worth, a long-time resident of Epsom, and by long-time Chichester resident and great friend of Billie’s, Pauline Reid.  The paintings include still-life, landscapes, seascapes and portraiture. Some depict local buildings and scenes, including a covered bridge that once stood in Epsom, and some are from annual treks to Monhegan Island made by Pauline and Billie.  Billie began sketching as a teenager, drawing portraits of movie stars popular in the 1930’s.  She studied for many years at the Currier Art Institute and had several one-woman showings.  She was the winner of many blue ribbons at various art competitions.  Billie and Pauline met when Billie was giving painting lessons in her home to area residents.  They remained friends for many years.

Story Hour and Crafts for pre-kindergartners and kindergartners continues on Mondays, starting at 3:00 p.m., at the Library.  There is a snack for our young ones as they enjoy a story or two, plus fun crafts.  It also provides a time for parents to catch their breath and enjoy watching their little ones have a good time.

On Wednesday, October 9th, 7 p.m., in the “Down Under” section at the Library, a craft group is organizing.  Those who are interested should bring a project they are currently working on or one which they would like to start.  Remember, the holidays are just around the corner—at least as far as crafting is concerned!

A few more October activities are listed below in summary form.  More in-depth Information will be forthcoming.

Thursday, October 17th, 7 p.m., Atty. Edward “Ted” Beasley will address many of the concerns of our aging population and Gregory Gagne of Affinity Investment Group will discuss planning for cash flow during retirement.

Sunday, October 20th, at 1:00 p.m., there will be a general clean-up of the Library grounds.  Please bring your rakes and other equipment to beautify our gardens and lawn.

Sunday, October 20th, at 2:00 p.m., there will be a dedication recognizing the “historical significance” of the Library with a plaque denoting “New Hampshire State Register of Historic Places.”

Saturday, October 26th, from noon to 1:30 p.m., the young and young-at-heart will be building Fairy Houses at Carpenter Park.

Chichester Grange

Chichester Grange met at the Grange Hall on October 2 at 7 p.m. State Grange Deputy Dorothy Haskins was present for her fall inspection visit.  Resolutions were read in memory of Shirley Waters.

Wildlife sightings included wild turkeys, deer, woodchucks, a blue heron in flight, cardinals, a bluejay, a downy woodpecker, and a lynx. Hannah West and Carolee Davison will each purchase a pair of children’s boots for the Galoshes from Grangers project sponsored by the NH State Grange Family and Community Committee. That committee is also looking for hats and mittens, either hand-made or purchased.

There was discussion of hosting an event where the various clubs and committees in town could explain what they do and make a pitch for new members. Such an event could benefit both the clubs and committees and any townspeople who might be looking for a new interest or a way to make friends and become involved locally. The Secretary will compose a letter and send it out to a list of clubs and committees to see if there is interest in such an event.

Anne Boisvert presented a program on the topic of Mickey Mouse. There were readings or activities for every letter in the words MICKEY MOUSE, including some jokes that were real groaners. Members also learned that the people who were the voices of Mickey and Minnie Mouse for many years were a married couple and that Walt Disney was afraid of real mice.

At the close of the meeting members enjoyed ice cream and toppings. There were even little round cookies to make Mickey Mouse ears on the ice cream.

The next meeting will be October 16. There will be discussion of the resolutions to be voted upon at the State Grange annual meeting. Cider and doughnuts will be served for refreshments.
