Even in this poor economy, bargains can be found. On January 10th, I
spotted an ad in the Sun for Sargeant’s Barbershop, located at the
Chichester Commons, just north of the Epsom Circle on Route 4.
Sargent’s was offering a "Twofer Tuesday" special: haircut and a
hot-towel shave, for only $20 or, bring in a buddy, and get two cuts
for $20!
Well, even at age 49, my full head of hair grows like a weed, and my
beard would make a good stand-in for industrial sandpaper! I’d never
had a barbershop shave, but letting someone else take over the
ornerous task sounded good to me.
The black-and-white Chichester Commons mini-mall sign was tough to
spot, but once I’d located them, Sargeant’s proved to be a welcoming
place. I was promptly perched in a classic and comfortable
old-school-style barber chair. My barber introduced himself, shook
my hand and asked my name.
The haircut was quick, no-nonsense and just as I ordered it. The
shave was meticulous and more comfortable than I expected. Not one
hot towel but three, were applied to the barbed wire I call my
beard. Luxurious lotions in-between towels, finishing up with a
bracing ice cold towel to seal the pores. A touch of talc, and I
thought I was done. The chair was put upright, but as I made to
rise, my barber held me back; "hold on a sec" he said, and began to
give me a brisk and welcome neck massage to ease out the kinks I had
not realized the long spell in the chair had put in. I went out of
there looking good and feeling great. I highly recommend this
barbershop.

Just a reminder. If school is cancelled due to weather, we will be
closed.
We have a nice assortment of jewelry for Valentines Day, along with
cute stuffed animals and valentine cards.
In our Report of Giving for 2011, some of the highlights are: 2,434
blankets/quilts/afghans (many of which were made by people who drop
them off at the thrift shop; 1,285 winter hats; 3,503 families
assisted with clothing needs; 1,095 with hygiene supplies; 68 pairs
of new boots; 185 winter jackets; 951 pairs of mittens.
You know the way it works. You donate; we either give it to a needy
recipient or sell it and use the money to buy the supplies needed by
the less fortunate. All the workers at the Attic, Baby Threads, and
the Sewing Room are volunteers, which is why we are able to
accomplish so much. Already this year we were able to help with
clothing needs for the Appalachian Teen project out of Laconia.
Come see us, we do have heat! We are at 345 Suncook Valley Highway,
Chichester. Our hours are Mon. 8-12, Tues. and Thurs. 8-4, Wed. 11-4
and Sat. 10-4. Or give us a call at 247-7191 or 707-7577
