Chichester Conservation Commission
The Chichester Conservation Commission has received
information from Forester Charles Moreno on recommendations for the
two Town Forests and Carpenter Park. Last week the Spaulding lot was
mentioned. This week we will be describing the Madeline Sanborn Town
Forest.
This land is located directly behind the Town
Offices. There is a kiosk at the edge of the parking lot and a trail
into the woods. This trail leads to a wonderful pine knoll where one
can sit on the benches and look out over the rippling water of Marsh
Pond. The area comprises 3 parcels of land. Two parcels totaling 30
acres were donated by Madeline Sanborn in 1991. In between them a
parcel of 7.9 acres was purchased from Joan and William R Cray by
the NH Department of Transportation as part of a wetlands mitigation
requirement.
The land is to be managed for wildlife habitat,
sustainable timber harvesting and passive recreation. There are
stands of white pine, hemlock and hardwoods, especially in the
eastern parcel. This area is landlocked so the permission of
adjacent property owners would be needed to harvest the timber.
There is currently a snowmobile trail that crosses it. The western
parcel, where the kiosk and trails are, has no feasible access at
this time and the recommendation is to let the area develop
naturally. There is a no hunting and no trapping restriction on
these lands. Please come to our public meeting October 13 at 7 pm at
the Grange Hall to learn more details from the Forester.
The Town of Chichester currently has about 350 acres
of open lands protected through conservation easements or deed
covenants. An easement is a means by which a landowner donates or
sells rights to develop the property for residential or commercial
purposes. At the same time, the easement allows the landowner to
continue forestry, agricultural, and recreational activities on the
land. The net result is that the land remains open in perpetuity,
maintaining open space and helping to preserve the rural character
of the town for the long term.
The Conservation Commission will host a program on
open space protection on November 10 at 7 pm at the Grange Hall.
Representatives of the Five Rivers Conservation Trust (5RCT) will be
available to answer questions on a range of topics related to
conservation easements, grant support of local efforts, and federal
tax implications for the landowner. Additional information on
easements can be obtained at the SPNHF web site at
http://clca.forestsociety.org/how-to-conserve-land/.
