Yankees Step Up To The Plate
New England Yankees have always exhibited patience, endurance, and a “we
take care of our own” attitude over the past 300 years. Sometimes it has
been a struggle but patience pays off.
That Yankee attitude has again come to play in Chichester. Lion Dave
Joslyn has spearheaded an effort to respond to Donna Chagnon’s frequent
requests for help with items for the Chichester Food Pantry. With the
Chichester Fire Association and the Epsom-Chichester Lions Club on board, a
plan was devised to make a serious impact on the needs of Chichester
citizens in need of assistance from the Food Pantry.
As a result, the Fire Association and the Lions Club planned a buffet
breakfast to be held on Saturday morning, January 30 at the Fire Station.
Again, working together in the Yankee Spirit, the firemen and the Lions Club
will prepare a fantastic breakfast of eggs, French toast, pancakes, sausage,
bacon, baked beans, potatoes, pastry and donuts and of course coffee.
The Chichester merchants have also responded to the call and most of
them have already made cash donations to the cause. The response from the
Merchants has been heart-warming.
We are inviting all in the Suncook Valley to attend this amazing
breakfast and plan to make a cash donation for it to the Chichester Food
Pantry. Your cash contribution will go directly to the food pantry and will
be applied to food and paper products for the Chichester community in need.
Chichester Heritage Commission
Need help tracing the history of your old house? The Chichester Heritage
Commission has been given some “upstairs space” for resources materials at
the Chichester Town Library. HOUSE HISTORIES: A GUIDE TO TRACING THE
GENEALOGY OF YOUR HOME is only one of many books and articles available in
this reference area. HOUSE HISTORIES includes chapters on “Inspecting the
House and Site,” “The Paper Search” and hints on reading old handwriting in
deeds and other documents. Also available is the NH Old House and Barn
Resource Directory which provides names of skilled craftspeople and
specialized products for old houses.
Should old windows be restored or replaced? You decide after reading the
article from the National Trust for Historic Preservation and the great
article on Historic Wooden Windows by James L. Garvin. Can’t decide on a
paint color suitable for your old house? We have several books and articles
on painting exterior surfaces.
We are also eager to add to our clippings notebook. Articles about
historic preservation efforts, successful or not, are of interest. If you
read articles in magazines, newspapers, or other sources, please note the
date and pass along to the heritage Commission for inclusion in the
reference area.
For our current project, the Commission has been busy compiling
information about the Grange/Town Hall building. We are now working on the
New Hampshire Division of Historical Resources inventory form to have this
1889 building listed on the State Register of Historic Places. If you have
photos or recollections of events being held in the Hall, please contact us.
The Chichester Heritage Commission has met every 3rd Thursday of the
month since June 2009, our first “year” has been a learning experience as we
work to define our direction and place within the community.
A proposed change to the commission membership will be on the Warrant at
Town Meeting in March 2010. The purpose of the change is to open the
membership to Chichester citizens who are very interested in historic and
cultural preservation under the provisions of RSA 673 and RSA 674. Another
Warrant Article asks for the establishment of a non-lapsing Heritage Fund in
accordance with the provision of RSA 674:44-d. This would allow the
commission to receive and expend monies from the fund under the provisions
of the law.
Historic buildings and cultural resources help define the character of
our town. The Commission strives to find solutions for preserving these
resources. The Chichester Heritage Commission encourages your comments, your
attendance and participation at meetings, and your support for the mission
of the Commission. For information, please call 798-5709.
Chichester Grange
Chichester Grange met on January 20 at the Grange Hall with eleven
members and seven guests in attendance. The evening began at six p. m. with
a Soup Supper. Members enjoyed a choice of five homemade soups and chowders,
breads and crackers, and assorted desserts.
Thank you notes were read from third graders at Pittsfield Elementary
School who had received dictionaries in November from The Dictionary
Project. The dictionaries were sponsored by The Northway Bank of Pittsfield
and presented by members of Chichester Grange. The dictionaries become the
personal property of the students and can be used at home and at school.
Wildlife sightings included nuthatches, crows, wild turkeys, grackles,
hairy and downy woodpeckers, squirrels, and a red fox. Information from the
NH State Grange Family & Community, Youth, and Legislative Departments was
shared. A donation was voted to the 4-H Foundation.
The program for the evening was a video presentation of information
about the National Grange Building in Washington, D. C. The present building
will be celebrating its 50th anniversary in June of 2010. Located at 1616 H
Street NW, the building is the headquarters of the National Grange and also
provides rental income to support Grange needs.
The next meeting of Chichester Grange will be held on February 3 at 7
p.m. There is only one meeting in February.
