Out Of Your Attic Thrift Shop News
By Ruthi True
Customers Talk, We Listen
Often I hear our customers talking and that’s where I get ideas to write
about. Today I heard a woman talking about what a service the thrift shop
was for her family. We (all the volunteers) work hard so that all the local
communities can have a nice thrift shop to go to, to buy clothing and
household items at a fraction of the cost. The lady is from Loudon and
says it gets her blood pumping every time she stops as she sees things
change each week. She also told me that a lot of the big thrift shops are
marking their prices up now that more folks are needing them.
With the economy like it is we have not gone up on prices since we came to
Chichester 4 years and 5 months ago. Our costs have gone up, but we have not
passed it on to our shoppers. If it wasn’t for that occasional extra check
donation we get from folks, it would be hard to function, but our
friends always get us through. It’s nice when people help us as it means
they see the good we do in the community. We have no paid staff, everyone is
a volunteer or community service worker.
I understand that the food pantries have been very happy with the birthday
party kits they received from us for the less fortunate families that could
not afford to give to the kids otherwise. Pittsfield and Barnstead received
theirs recently.
We’re always looking for ways to help less fortunate families. Got ideas??
TELL US!!
Don’t make the mistake of thinking that all thrift shops are the same
- THEY’RE NOT! Sometimes the little unheard of shops are the ones with the
best deals or the better specials. There are 3 thrift shops right in your
local area so why not shop local.
Volunteering at a thrift shop is like walking down a railroad track. The end
seems in sight but IT NEVER IS!!
