Granite Girls State

The American Legion Auxiliary of Barnstead, Unit 42, would like to offer a unique opportunity for a high school girl, entering her senior year, who is interested in government, politics, and current events.

This summer, girls from across New Hampshire will meet with local leaders and American Legion Auxiliary representatives for the 69th session of Granite Girls State. The program is a good opportunity for girls considering college and can teach them the skills necessary to take up leadership roles. For one week, they will learn about the inner workings of government, take part in mock elections, and sponsor and debate their own bills.

The week starts out with a focus on local government, gradually branching out to explore party politics and our own state government. Through guest speakers and various programs, Girls State educates young women on the importance of good citizenship, enabling each girl to decide for herself what it means to be an American. Citizens of Girls State will have fun and build lasting friendships, and two girls will be chosen to represent New Hampshire at Girls Nation in Washington DC. In addition, worthwhile scholarships are available.

The program will be held at Franklin Pierce University in Rindge from June 23-29th, and any interested families should contact the guidance department and/or Cindy at 776-3091. More information can be found at www.alaforveterans.org and www.facebook.com/AmericanLegionAuxiliaryGirlsState.

Mark will also be speaking at a Prison Fellowship weekend seminar in the Concord State Prison on April 26-27th. Lakes Region Community College (LRCC) Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) inductees, Christina Shea (Barnstead-left), and Suzanne Brown (Loudon-right), are shown with Shea’s granddaughter, Maci Horton (center), age 2, following the recent Ceremony. Twenty-seven individuals were inducted into LRCC’s Alpha Chi Epsilon Chapter of PTK, the recognized honor society for two-year colleges worldwide.

“I am also glad to be inducted into PTK and find it a significant honor and academic accomplishment,” says Brown who earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology at University of New Hampshire - Durham.  “Christina and I have formed great friendships through LRCC’s Nursing Program.”  Brown’s father, Max Brown (Loudon-not pictured), is a long-term LRCC Business Management Professor.

Shea plans to continue for her Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing at Southern New Hampshire University following LRCC graduation.  She also desires to earn the Master’s Degree in Nursing specializing in pediatrics or hospice care.

LEGO Construction At Barnstead Library!

Barnstead Lego.jpg

Our second annual Lego Construction Party on Saturday, March 30, 2013 was another great success! We had 13 children, varying in age, who participated in building many spectacular structures. Most of the children really enjoyed being creative and building something unique, while others had fun working with adults on more elaborate sets to build specific items. It was a joy for us to watch the children concentrate, cooperate, and construct their masterpieces. Please visit the library to view all of the children’s wonderful creations, which will be on display until the end of April.

The OFML staff would like to thank all those who donated blocks for this event. We would also like to thank the Meehan and Varney families for helping us clean up after this event. All of your continued community support is greatly appreciated.

With Chris Bonoli And The Blues Monsters

Peg Chaffee and Cheryl Sager of “Nice & Naughty” will perform at the Cabin Fever Spring Dessert Concert at the Barnstead Town Hall on Saturday, April 27th.

If you enjoyed the New Year’s Eve Milk and Cookies Concert at the Barnstead Town Hall, please join us for the Cabin Fever Spring Dessert Concert on April 27th at the Barnstead Town Hall. The concert will be held from 6:30-8:30 p.m. with a reception following the concert to meet the musicians and socialize with your neighbors. Chris Bonoli and the Blues Monsters will host the concert featuring a buffet of desserts, drinks and light snacks. There will be 3 musical combinations: 30 minutes of Jazz, 30 minutes of Folk, and 30 minutes of Blues!

We are thrilled to present Peg Chaffee and Cheryl Sager who formed their own music duo “Nice & Naughty” after performing together in other musical combinations. Their original songs are captivating and their voices blend in natural harmonies. We are also thrilled to bring you a local jazz quartet “Savoya” consisting of Sureya on vocals, Chris Gilb of Tilton on electric bass guitar, Lee Ames of Laconia on saxophone and flute and a mystery jazz guitarist (for you to name) who lived in Barnstead and recently moved to Gilmanton. Savoya performs every other Thursday evening in Tilton.

The hosts of the evening, the Blues Monsters will play 30 minutes of blues with Chris Bonoli of Barnstead on guitar and vocals, Marty Wintje of Farmington on electric lead guitar and Syd Brooks of Rochester on bass. They will have guest appearances by spoon player, Lew Josselyn and saxophone player, Ken Burt, both of Barnstead.

To have tickets delivered to your home, please call and leave your name and phone number with Karly West at 856-1052, Chris Bonoli at 776-3616, or Lew Josselyn and Lorraine Burdo at 269-3317.  We will get back to you and deliver the tickets. Seating will be at tables for 8 if you would like to organize a group to attend together.  Tickets are limited to 85 attendees so don’t delay in calling.

The town hall plans to have a wheelchair accessible bathroom installed by the concert date and you may check with Chris Bonoli for a progress update on the facility. All proceeds will support the mission and ministries of the Congregational Church of North Barnstead.
