Do You
Remember?
Do you
remember when the trains ran to Barnstead Parade and Center Barnstead?
Did you go to school in the Center Barnstead’s two room school or the
Parade school? Were you a member of the Volunteer Fire Dept.? Do you
remember the mills in Barnstead or know their history? Do you remember
the time before Route 28? Do you remember the little post office in the
Center where Ethel Pinkham was Postmistress, when the ‘new’ post office
was built? Do you remember when the Barnstead Elementary School was
built, when Prospect Mountain High School was built? Do you remember
roller skating in Town Hall? Do you remember the dances in Town Hall? Do
you remember the firemen’s dances at Barnstead Elemementary School and
the street dances and auctions? How about the Firemen’s Fourth of July
Celebration and Old Home Day on the parade?
Do you have
ancestors who lived in Barnstead? Have you read the genealogical
records of Barnstead families including Twink Merrill’s Barnstead
Families? Have you researched your family history? Do you know about the
famous people from Barnstead including Harriet Dame, Harrison Thyng
(yes, he had a Barnstead connection), Oscar Foss and others? Do you know
the names of our war heroes from the Revolutionary War, the Civil War
and the World Wars? Are you interested in our agricultural history? Did
you know that Barnstead had many small ‘shops’ including shoe shops,
blacksmith shops and cooper shops? Did you know that Barnstead was a
thriving commercial center when the Mills were running? There were saw
mills, a fulling mill, tanning mills and, most recently a weaving mill?
Sound interesting? Want to learn more?
Barnstead’s
History is worth preserving. Please Vote Yes on Articles 4 and 5 on
March 16th at Town Meeting.
Thank you,
Sandy Burt

Letter To
The Editor
Money still
remains tight for all of us, but the citizens of Barnstead have a great
opportunity now to improve our Town for our children and grandchildren.
I urge all
voters at the March 16th Town meeting to support Articles 4 to purchase
the Pinkham property. The Town and the Barnstead Historical Society has
been raising money for over 8 years to purchase a building to preserve
and display Barnstead’s history. Article 5 is to appropriate the $
40,000 in the ‘Historical Society capital reserve’ for building
improvements.
The Pinkham
family has reduced the cost to the Town by $10,000 for this purchase.
The Pinkham property at 96 South Barnstead Road, with 203 foot road
frontage, includes an 1859 cape, attached shed and large barn with a
garage attached on 1.17 acres in the center of Town. This property abuts
the Center bandstand and Center fire station and it connects directly to
the 13 acres of back land previously purchased by the Town.
The new
Barnstead Historical Society Museum building would provide meeting
rooms, display and storage areas for the Town’s history. Our children
and grandchildren will be able to enjoy the interesting history of
Barnstead and its people. A Town study by citizens, held 7 years ago,
emphasized the need for a Town center. This property would make the
center more functional and attractive.
The
one-time cost to obtain the Pinkham Property would be 40 cents per
thousand on the tax rate or $40 per $100,000 of evaluation. A $200,000
evaluation would add $80 to only this year’s taxes or $6.67 per month
for 12 months. Please consider the future of Barnstead and Vote Yes for
Articles 4 and 5 on this Saturday, March 16 Town meeting.
Thank you
for your consideration.
