akes Region Community College (LRCC) President, Dr. Scott Kalicki (center), welcomes Energy Services Technology (EST) scholarship recipient, J.P. Hamel (Barnstead- left), and EST Professor, Wes Golomb (Deerfield- right), to the front at LRCC’s Awards Night held recently. Hamel received the Second Annual David Peel Scholarship awarded to an outstanding EST student who exemplifies the spirit of David Peel, one of the first LRCC EST graduates. "David Peel had great qualities as an EST student at LRCC," says Golomb, who was one of Peel’s main professors. "He had an uncanny knack for finding and diagnosing building energy issues and solving them. J.P. Hamel was given the Second Annual David Peel Scholarship Award because of similar traits to Peel’s, making Mr. Hamel one of LRCC’s top EST students.

Summer Season & Summer Picnic Series 2012

The Rochester Opera House presents a summer season of fun-filled performances and activities for children of all ages. Summer Theatre Camp designed to give students a joyous hands-on theatre experience, offers four two-week sessions with all levels of training in theatre techniques. The program is a great opportunity for children ages four through teen to dance, sing, learn and grow on our historic stage. Sessions begin June 25 and run through August 17. Learn more about Summer Theatre Camp and registration at www.rochesteroperahouse.com.

The Summer Picnic Series is packed with six entertaining and educational shows for kids, their families and teachers. The floor is down and the orchestra seats are removed, so there’s lots of room for dancing and singing along with the music! Bring your picnic basket and a blanket for these delightful performances every Wednesday at 10:00 am from July 11 through August 15.

Julie and Brownie kick off the Summer Picnic Series on July 11 with a jolly ride on the "Streamlined Double Decker Bus." With a rare blend of original and traditional songs of positive thoughts for children, the destination is just pure fun.

The duo returns with "It’s A Pirate’s Life For Me" on August 8th to take the audience for a voyage down the Eastern Coast, around Cape Horn and up to San Francisco with a cargo of fun with original and traditional sea songs. Kids sing, clap and interact with musician and teacher Susie Burke on July 25.

Our talented junior performers present three kid-pleasing shows during the summer season including the fantastic "Broadway Musical Revue" on July 18, the engaging "Wizard of Oz" 2012 on August 1 and the happy "Happily Ever After" on August 15.

All shows are on Wednesdays at 10:00 am and all tickets are $5.00. To purchase tickets, call or stop by the box office (335-1992) on W/F from 12-5 or one hour before the show. The Rochester Opera House is located in City Hall, 31 Wakefield Street, Rochester NH.

Barnstead Library’s Book Discussion Meetings

The Oscar Foss Memorial Library in Center Barnstead continues to sponsor its monthly Book Discussion meeting at 7pm on the first Wednesday of every month. The library provides copies of the monthly books through New Hampshire’s inter-library loan program.

Some of the group’s past books include Kathryn Stockett’s The Help, Sara Gruen’s Water for Elephants, John Steinbeck’s The Grapes of Wrath, David Wroblewski’s The Story of Edgar Sawtelle, Greg Mortenson’s Three Cups of Tea, Nathaniel Philbrick’s The Mayflower, Thoreau’s Walden, and The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows.

The various discussions over the years have explored authors such as Donald Hall, Jodi Picoult, Wendell Berry, Geraldine Books, Russell Banks, Jhumpa Lahiri, Bill Bryson, Sarah Orne Jewett, Jonathan Safran Foer, Toni Morrison, Cormac McCarthy, and Jeanette Walls, just to name a few.

Book Discussion chairperson, Heather Carter, is encouraging local residents who enjoy reading to attend a meeting. "We’ve been getting together at the library for seven years now and we’re very lucky to have such a great group of people and such lively discussion! At the end of every meeting, I always feel so grateful that Barnstead has such wonderful resources as the library and the book group. We’re always looking forward to new people joining us and sharing their love of books. Anyone can drop in at any one of the meetings."

The Oscar Foss Memorial Library is located at 111 South Barnstead Road in Center Barnstead. For more information, contact the library at 603-269-3901 or email Heather Carter at [email protected].
