Oscar Foss
Memorial Library 2011 Summer Reading Program Registration
Barnstead’s Oscar Foss Memorial Library invites you and your children to
join us for the 2011 Summer Reading Program, supported in part by a
grant from the NH State Library and donations from the Byrne Foundation,
CHILIS, Cogswell Benevolent Trust, and the NH Library Association.
This year’s theme is “One World, Many Stories,” designed to encourage
reading for pleasure in a relaxed, fun environment. Read for six
weeks and enjoy summertime fun, too!
Kids teens and adults, come be a
part of the activities! Crafts are planned during the 6 week
program for two different Wednesday mornings (10 am to noon) and there
will be a Summer Reading Activity Booklet. We will have three
raffle baskets; children, young adult and adult as well as other
surprises along the way. Our ending program is Reptiles On The
Move and is scheduled for August 17th.
Signup/registration begins
Wednesday, June 1st and ends Saturday, June 18th. The first book
must be recorded by July 1st, and the last book must be recorded by
August 13th. Sign up and decorate a cutout boy or girl from
another country. For every book or equivalent, participants get a
raffle ticket towards the final drawing, and can add a sticker to the
world map! Those kids and teens who complete the six-book minimum
will receive a SRP ending packet.
Here’s a chance to keep your kids
reading over the summer, and to share the summertime reading fun
together! For more details and information, please contact the
library at 269-3900 or come to the desk.
Bon voyage!

2nd
Annual Phil Grillo Youth Fishing Derby A Huge Success
The 2nd Annual
Phil Grillo Youth Fishing Derby put on by the Barnstead Parks and
Recreation Department on Saturday, May 7, 2011, attracted more than
seventy young future fishing fanatics. The weather was great and
the fish were biting! Well over 120 trout were caught with the
majority being released back into the water for future anglers’
enjoyment. Austin Fifield was the big winner, catching the largest
fish which netted him a new, beautiful bicycle. The second place
winner, Marshall Cook, won a four hour kayak trip package for two.
The third place winner, Nicole Treadwell, won a dinner for two at the
Barley House Restaurant in Concord. She will probably enjoy that
dinner with her grandmother, who was her fishing coach. The person
who caught the most fish (15) was a girl who had never fished before,
Jenica Locke. She chose a four hour deep sea fishing trip for two
as her prize. I’m sure her grandfather, who acted as her fishing
coach, will accompany her on that trip. The smallest fish was
caught by Maddy Chase and it’s a big secret as to just how small that
fish was. There were other prizes given out including one for the
first fish caught, one to the youngest fisherperson, and onto the third
runner up for the biggest trout. This was a 12 inch long trout
caught by Julianna Grillo. All in all it was a great day and
everyone followed the number one rule of the derby; “Everyone Must Have
Fun.”
Many, many thanks to those whose generosity made this fishing
derby such a success: The Barnstead Country Store, Eastman Deep
Sea Fishing in Seabrook, Barn Door Gap Adventures in Barnstead,
Maxfield’s Hardware in Pittsfield, The Barley House Restaurant in
Concord, Storey’s Sport Shop, in Tilton, and Hannaford’s Supermarket in
Concord. Additionally, the fishing derby would not have been
possible without the hard work and time given by the volunteers:
the Grillo family, the Grow family, the Gontarz family, the LaRoche
family, NH Fish & Game Dept., and the Town of Barnstead Parks and
Recreation Department, and especially the Locke Lake Colony Association.
See you next year for the 3rd Annual Phil Grillo Youth Fishing Derby!
