Post 42 Seeks Girls State Candidates

The American Legion Auxiliary of Barnstead, Post 42, would like to offer a unique opportunity for a high school girl, entering her senior year, who is interested in government, politics, and current events. This summer, girls from across New Hampshire will meet with local leaders and American Legion Auxiliary representatives for the 66th session of Granite Girls State.

The program is a good opportunity for girls considering college and can teach them the skills necessary to take up leadership roles. For one week, they will learn about the inner workings of government, take part in mock elections, and sponsor and debate their own bills. The week starts out with a focus on local government, gradually branching out to explore party politics and our own state government.

Through guest speakers and various programs, Girls State educates young women on the importance of good citizenship, enabling each girl to decide for herself what it means to be an American. Citizens of Girls State will have fun and build lasting friendships, and two girls will be chosen to represent New Hampshire at Girls Nation in Washington DC.

In addition, worthwhile scholarships are available.  Lauren Covalucci of Barnstead received $1000 through participation in last year’s Girls State. The program will be held at Rivier College in Nashua from June 27th to July 2nd, and any interested families may contact Carol at 269-4694 or Cindy at 776-3091  for more information.

World’s Smallest Horse

Tiz A Miniature Horse Farm is having a Visitor’s Day on May 8th, 2010, at 158 Garland Rd., Barnstead, NH,   from 10-4. We will be doing cart rides, demonstrations on what a miniature horse can do, foals to pet, lots of horses to see. Food will be available.  For more info, please contact Larry and Judy Smith at 603-435-7351.

The world’s smallest horse was born at Tiz A Miniature Horse Farm in Barnstead, New Hampshire recently. Weighing in under 6 pounds and only 14 inches high, the little colt named Einstein is sure to make the Guiness Book of World Records.

Judy Smith, the breeder who has specialized in mini horses for the past twenty years, says Einstein is by far the smallest horse she has ever seen. According to Smith, “Einstein is one in a million, or maybe even a billion.” Mini horses are bred to be small by nature, but this horse is an anomaly.

Bellingham, Washington, residents Dr. Rachel Wagner and Charles Cantrell who happened to be visiting the farm just hours after Einstein’s birth, saw him and immediately fell in love with the little stallion. They purchased the horse immediately for a companion to their other mini horse, Karma. The proud new parents will keep Einstein at Smith’s farm for care and training. According to Dr. Wagner, “Einstein is a New Hampshire miracle and appears to be a perfectly shaped little horse with no sign of dwarfism”.

Barnstead Historical Society

The Barnstead Historical Society met recently and members are very pleased to know the Town is allowing the Society to adopt the Center Barnstead Bandstand as its restoration project beginning this year.  A unique bandstand, built for the town by John Jenkins, it has been an integral part of life in Center Barnstead for several decades. It is in need of work both cosmetic and structural.

The Society wants the bandstand painted, readying it for Memorial Day celebrations this year. The Society is inviting members and townspeople to participate in this beginning step of restoration by scraping the old paint before and on the set painting date of May 12th - at your convenience.  Every bit helps! Able-bodied workers would be much appreciated on May 12th at 9a.m. - weather permitting; rain date May 19.

Barnstead-Alton Republicans Announce 1st

Congressional District Candidates Forum

The Barnstead-Alton Republican Committee (BARC) is pleased to announce a special event at the May, 2010 BARC meeting.  BARC is sponsoring a 1st Congressional District Meet the (Republican) Candidates Forum.  All six of the declared Republican candidates for Congress representing the 1st district have committed to attending this event; they are all seeking the opportunity to go head-to-head against Carol Shea-Porter (d-NH) for her congressional seat in Washington, DC.  Before these candidates can face Shea-Porter, they must face each other in the September Republican Primary to determine who will be challenging Shea-Porter.   So, if you're not sure which 1st CD candidate you should vote for in the primary, here's your opportunity to hear from ALL of them at the same event.

This event will be held at J.J. Goodwin's Restaurant, 769 Suncook Valley Highway (Rt. 28), Center Barnstead NH on Tuesday, May 11, at 6 pm (a 1/2 hour earlier than the normal start time for BARC meetings) or feel free to arrive at 5pm for dinner (at your option).  All interested Republicans and Unaffiliated/Independents are invited to attend. For more information, go to the BARC website at www.BARC-NewHampshire.com or send an email to [email protected].
