Library News
A reminder that we are offering a fine-free period at
the library through the holiday season. In the spirit of Helping
our Neighbors, the Oscar Foss Memorial Library in Center Barnstead is
joining forces with the Food Pantry and offering a fine-free period
until January 1st.
Instead of any late fees, we are asking you to
donate a non-perishable item to our donation box, which is set up in the
Library at the front desk. Due to your generosity, we have already
taken several bags to the Food Pantry! And remember, many of our
patrons don’t have a fine at the library, but just donate. We are
grateful to all.
ALL items MUST be non-perishable, MUST be sealed and
MUST NOT be expired - PLEASE check the dates. We would appreciate
an extended expiration date if possible. We want to send only
quality, in-date items which will truly help a Barnstead family.
Jars of spaghetti sauce, canned fruit or vegetables, pasta,
crackers, cereal and more. The list is endless and there is also a
need for toiletry items such as toilet paper, floss, shaving cream,
soap, diapers, kleenex, etc. Thank you all.
IN NEED OF A LAST
MINUTE CHRISTMAS GIFT????
Don’t forget that the Library sells
the History of Barnstead by Jeremiah P Jewett, M.D., which covers the
years 1727 to 1872. This hardcover book sells for only $15 and
would make just the right gift for the historian in your family.
We also have a number of VERY gently used hardcover and paperback books
for sale. Stop by the library and see what we have to help fill
out your Christmas list.
HAPPY HOLIDAYS!
The
Christmas Puzzle
The Center Barnstead Christian Church would like to
invite you to see our Christmas Musical Program, “The Christmas Puzzle”.
This musical takes place at Grandma’s house, where four cousins are
snowed in and all they can find to entertain themselves is an old
puzzle. Each puzzle piece represents a different piece of the
Christmas story, and how we’re all part of God’s picture.
Refreshments will follow the performance.
Come and bring the family
Sunday, December 12th at 6:00 PM. The Center Barnstead Christian
Church is located on Route 126, next to the Town Hall. For more
information, please call the church at 269-8831.
Thanks!

Yule-tide
Letter
Another Christmas season is upon us, and the song
Rudolph,
The Red-nosed Reindeer returns.
It is a song so familiar, that most
children now
Know its every word.
Seems like an innocent story,
one with a happy ending,
But what message does it send to children?
First, he
is laughed at...then all the other reindeer call
Him funny names, and
won’t let him play in any
Reindeer games....until one stormy night,
when he
Is needed, to guide Santa’s sleigh!
And, as the song goes:
“Then all the Reindeer loved him,
And they shouted out with glee.”
Doesn’t all
this suggest to children, that it’s in some way
Acceptable to laugh
at others, call them names,
And exclude them from your games...that
is,
Until you really need their help?
Shouldn’t the message of
Christmas really
Be more than this?
An innocent
tale, perhaps, but a not-so-innocent
Message for young children.
Perhaps I’m over-reacting, but I don’t think so.
In the end,
I guess it’s nice that Rudolph helped Santa,
And guided his sleigh
through the stormy night.
But, during the next reindeer migration,
wouldn’t it be nice
If Rudolph could find a new herd, one in which he
Is loved all the time, and not only when he is needed?
I’m sure
there’s one out there, somewhere!
Have a nice Christmas.
