Lyndon State College Television Studies Names Local Student Finalist In Web Competition

The Lyndon State College, Lyndonville, Vermont, Television Studies Students’ first effort to provide community-based news and information on the Internet has been chosen as a national finalist in the Best Student Media Web Site competition run by College Broadcasters, Inc. (CBI).

Along with the NewsLINC website (www.news7newslinc.net), the students’ nightly half-hour newscast News 7 is a national finalist in CBI’s Best Student Television Newscast category, and a public service announcement called “HOPE” has been named a finalist in the Best PSA Category.

The National recognition comes very early in NewsLINC’s history. The website debuted in January 2009 under the co-direction of Assistant Professor Meaghan Meachem and Director of Broadcast Operations Darlene Bolduc-Ballou. Working on the site at that time was Local TVS student, Courtney Rosemond, Center Barnstead, NH, who posted updated and enhanced versions of stories from the News 7 newsroom as well as new content and information.

College Broadcasters, Inc., is a national organization representing students involved in media ventures and works to ensure a commitment to education and the student pursuit of excellence through active involvement in electronic media. Winners will be announced at the 88th Annual National College Media Convention in Austin, Texas, Oct. 28-November 1, 2009.

Barnstead-Alton Republican Committee To Hold Meeting

The Barnstead-Alton Republican Committee (BARC) will hold their next monthly meeting on Thursday, September 10 at J.J. Goodwin’s Restaurant (upstairs), 769 Suncook Valley Rd (Rt 28), Center Barnstead - (603) 269-8300.  Dinner (at your option) is at 5:30 p.m.; the meeting will begin at 6:30 pm.

In their continuing efforts to showcase the GOP candidates for the November 2010 elections, BARC is pleased to announce that Frank Guinta, Mayor of Manchester and a candidate for Congress from the 1st District, will be the guest speaker at the September meeting. Mayor Guinta was elected in November 2005 to his first term as Mayor, running on a platform of improving education, increasing public safety and security, revitalizing Manchester’s neighborhoods, promoting fiscal responsibility, and reducing property tax rates.  He won re-election to his current term in November 2007.  Prior to serving as Mayor, Frank served as an Alderman in Manchester, and as a State Representative.   Frank will talk about his record, and his action plans for Washington if elected.  For more information about Mayor Guinta, please see his website:  www.teamguinta.com

In addition to hearing from the Mayor, the agenda also includes:
• A legislative update from our State Representatives in attendance
• A “special election” update (to fill vacancies in the State Legislature)
• Discussion and organization of grass roots efforts towards a successful 2010 election season.
BARC, formed in the Fall of 2008, has helped to promote Republican principles and values by engaging the local community.  Meetings tend to be somewhat informal, offering an opportunity for the townspeople of Alton, Barnstead, and surrounding towns to discuss issues and concerns about such matters as the economy, healthcare, pending legislation, etc., and to hear from candidates and your elected officials.
For more information, please send an email to [email protected] or visit the BARC website, www.BARC-NewHampshire.com.

Barnstead Old Home Day Reschedule of Rained-Out Activities

Mother Nature tried to dampen the spirits of the participants in the Old Home Day Horseshoe Tournament. It was relocated to an indoor facility and 16 people, 8 teams, played for the Bragging Rights of Champion. Roland LaBrecque and Greg Stockman defeated Chip Elliott and Dale Bowen. Yes,  Chip and Dale, for the title.

Day-long and steady rains on Saturday, August 29, 2009, forced the cancellation of many of the planned activities for Barnstead Old Home Day, 2009. But, not to be discouraged by a little wet weather, the Barnstead Old Home Day Committee has rescheduled some of the cancelled activities, as follows:

The Canoe and Kayak Race is rescheduled for Saturday, September 19, 2009.  Registration fee is $5.00 per boat and registrations will be taken at the launch site on the Big River (behind the Barnstead Police Station) from 12:00 noon-1:45 p.m. on the day of the race. The race will begin at 2:00 p.m.

Each registrant will receive a free T-shirt. Racing categories include tandem canoe, solo canoe, tandem kayak and solo kayak.  Awards will be given to the first, second and third place finishers as solo male and female, tandem male pairs and female pairs, coed pairs and senior pairs in each category.

The Old Home Day Auction is rescheduled for Saturday, September 19, 2009 at Barnstead Town Hall.  Bidder registration and auction preview will begin at 3:00 p.m. The Auction will begin promptly at 4:00 p.m. This will be a live auction, with Russ Abbott from Atlantic Auction Company as our auctioneer.

The Barnstead Old Home Day live auction is not only fun and exciting, but is also the primary fund-raising event that supports the expense of future Old Home Days. This is a great opportunity to support this important community event, and a chance to bid on very desirable items and services donated by local businesses, individuals and families.

Also scheduled for Saturday, September 19, 2009 at Barnstead Town Hall are a “Best Crock Pot Dish in Barnstead Contest” and an Apple Baking Contest.  Awards of $50.00 will be given to the winner of each contest.

Crock Pot entries will be accepted at Town Hall on the September 19, beginning at 3:00 p.m. and continuing until 6:00 p.m. Starting at 6:30 p.m., immediately following the Old Home Day Auction, judging will be conducted by popular vote of public tasters. For a fee of $3.00 per person, tasters can taste all Crock Pot entries, with a roll and beverage, and vote for the best Crock Pot Dish in Barnstead. Bring your favorite Crock Pot dish to the Auction, and compete for a $50.00 cash prize! To pre-register for the Crock Pot Contest, call Eileen Murley at 435-6692 by September 17, 2009.

We request a copy of the recipe for your Crock Pot dish and permission to publish the recipe in a 2010 cookbook, “Recipes of Barnstead Old Home Day”. Entrants will be responsible for arranging for pick-up of their Crock Pot by 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, September 19, 2009.

And, don’t miss out on the Apple Baking Contest.  Fall is the time to make all those wonderful baked apple comfort foods! Any home-baked good containing apples is eligible. Dig out the old family recipe; try something new; craft your own apple creation! Show off your culinary talents and have some fun. And best of all, the prize of $50.00 may very well be yours!

Apple Baking Contest entries will be accepted at Town Hall beginning at 3:00 p.m. and continuing until 6:00 p.m. Winning entry will be selected by a panel of judges at 6:30 p.m.  Following the selection of the winning entry, all entries will be served as dessert to Crock Pot Contest tasters. We, also, request a copy of the recipe for your apple dish and permission to publish the recipe in a 2010 cookbook, “Recipes of Barnstead Old Home Day.”

It will be a fun and interesting afternoon and evening at Barnstead Town Hall on Saturday, September 19, 2009. Let’s get together and enjoy the Auction and the Crock Pot and Apple Baking Contests!

A second Barnstead 5K Road Race is being scheduled for Saturday, October 24, 2009. Registration for the race will begin at 7:30 a.m. at the starting line on Parade Circle in Barnstead Parade. The race will start at 9:00 a.m. The course is fast and flat, stretching from the Parade Grounds out Parade Road to Route 126 and then back to the finish line at Parade Circle.
