Barnstead Old Home Day Auction Was A Success!

After Barnstead Old Home Day was largely rained out on Saturday, August 29, some of the rained out activities were rescheduled for dates in September and October. The Old Home Day Auction was rescheduled for Saturday, September 19 at Barnstead Town Hall. We are happy to report that the auction was great fun and a financial success, and that we were able to raise earnings essentially equivalent to the earnings we typically raise at an Old Home Day auction at the Parade Grounds.

Auctioneer Russ Abbott from Atlantic Auction Company, with the assistance of his wife and auction clerk, Nancy, set the course from the beginning for an organized, smooth and very enjoyable auction.  Bidding was strong from a crowd of approximately forty-five registered bidders. Over a period of two hours, ninety-six items were successfully auctioned off.   The Barnstead Old Home Day Committee extends its sincere appreciation to the businesses and individuals who donated the auction items, to Russ and Nancy Abbott who ran a very enjoyable auction, to the auction volunteer workers and especially to the community members who came to bid enthusiastically and to support this important fund-raising event.

The “Best Crock Pot Dish in Suncook Valley” and the “Apple Baking Contest” followed the auction and many bidders stayed to enjoy the creations of some of our local chefs. We had numerous crock pot entries and apple baked goods entries to evaluate; participants and judges struggled to pick the winning entries.  Everyone had a great time and a full stomach

The winner of the Crock Pot Contest was Chryss Laroche of Barnstead. The judges decided upon a tie for the Apple Baking Contest with Mary Fougere and Marie Farmer, both of Barnstead, selected as winners. Congratulations to all the winners and thank you to everyone who brought an entry.

The winners of the Old Home Day Raffle were selected following the conclusion of the cooking contests. Jim Duchaney of Barnstead won the two Montclair Benches and Tom McCarthy of Barnstead won the kayak and paddles.  Congratulations to each of them.
Barnstead Old Home Day has been a very different event than what had been planned because of the rains on the scheduled day, but, the Old Home Day Committee would still like to thank the numerous individuals and businesses who worked to plan the original event and to plan and present the rescheduled events.

• Barnstead Parade Congregational Church.
• The community volunteers who worked at the events.
• John Cotton and Bob Tiffany for sound and announcing.
• Dan Poole for upgrading the electrical system.
• Matthew Raymond who donated his talents to create the theme artwork.
• Jim Doucette for organizing the horseshoe throwing contest.

In addition to the above individuals and organizations, the following businesses and individuals provided much appreciated support: Duane Family Farm, Jeanne Terry/Treasurer Town of Barnstead, Karen Gosse Signs, and Mooswa Reality. Please patronize our supporters!

We appreciate all the organizations, businesses and individuals who have helped us this year and all the years in the past. We could not do it without you all! Let’s hope for better weather next year!

Once again, under the direction of Dawn McCartney, Story Hour will be presented each Wednesday morning at 10:00 a.m. EXCEPT when school is not in session.

Journey to the Philippines

You’ll see pictures of the families “living with the dead”! That is a cemetery (actually hundreds of crypts piled on top of each other) where hundreds of people live.

Bill Blount recently took a trip with the Bible League to the Philippines. He will be sharing with us about his trip. He’ll show pictures and tell the story of visiting a village in the mountains where there is no power or clean water. In that little village is a mud floor, thatched roof church where every morning at 4:00 AM the tribes people meet for 1 hour of prayer.

Lastly, you’ll visit a Muslim “water village”, which are bamboo huts built on stilts over the water, and how the Gospel is making an impact in a most difficult area. This journey begins at 4:30 PM on Sunday, October 4th at the Center Barnstead Christian Church. The church is located on Route 126, next to the Town Hall. For more information call the church at 269-8831.
