Locke Lakers

Submitted By Peggy Gingras
The Locke Lakers will be having their Pizza Night, August 30, 2009, at Pizza Hut in Rochester. It was originally scheduled for August 15, 2009, but because of the second part of the Annual Meeting it was canceled. We are asking everyone who plans to attend to make a $5.00 deposit by August 22, 2009, so that we know how many are coming. The deposit will be returned to you if you attend. You will be responsible for your own pizza, the club will not be paying for them.

If you have any questions, please call 776-6575 or 776-0522. We will be car pooling, so if you need a ride, be at the Lodge by 4:30 PM. Hope to see you there.

Locke Lake Colony Association Board Of Directors Annual Meeting Part II

Submitted By
Locke Lake Colony Association Board Of Directors
The Locke Lake Colony Association Board of Directors would like to thank all the members who attended the second part of the Annual Meeting and those of you who sent in proxies.

It was great to see all of you and your input was greatly appreciated. The budget that was voted on is less than last year which is a good thing, wth these economic times, and we are able to work with  it. We hope to start the work on the Lodge soon and are anxious to get it done. Again, we thank you for giving up your time on a hot summer day to attend this very important meeting.

Concord Church Band Comes To North Barnstead

By Joyce Beairsto and Rev. David Keller
In its first “road trip”, the First Congregational Church of Concord Band will be accompanying congregational singing at the August 30th service at the Congregational Church of North Barnstead. The band, featuring three teenage boys and Rev. David Keller, the pastor of the First Church, was formed in August of 2008. They have played at a number of services in the Concord Church and are excited about sharing their music in other churches.

The band members are: Justin Belair playing guitar, Zachary Belair playing drums, Sam Irvine playing bass guitar, and David Keller playing guitar and directing the band. Justine Paul, North Barnstead’s guest pianist, will play on keyboard.

The band plays music for congregational singing. Much of their music comes from the Iona tradition, some of which sets new lyrics to traditional hymn tunes. They also play some contemporary praise music pieces.

Rev. Keller began playing contemporary music in churches in 1968 – at that time the music of youth was in folk tradition. Now young people are more capable of playing in a rock tradition, so Rev. Keller has been making the adjustment. Even though the sound is electrified, most people find the music quite ‘singable.’

The North Barnstead Church is welcoming everyone to come. The Church is at 504 North Barnstead Rd. The service begins at 10 am.

Barnstead Library Ends Summer Reading Program

The Summer Reading program at the Oscar Foss Memorial Library has officially ended. Our last event, open to the public, was a fun-filled morning on August 11th with magician Norman Ng performing The Norman Magic Experience. The dynamic show had the all-age audience of 100 spellbound with his feats of magic including making a bowling ball appear out of a sketchpad! This program was supported in part by a grant from the NH State Library and donations from the Byrne Foundation, CHILIS, the Cogswell Benevolent Trust, and the NH Library Association.

We would like to thank the following people and organizations for helping to make the summer reading program a GREAT success. Thanks to McDonald’s and Chucksters for donating ice cream gift certificate awards, to Jay’s Bayside Golf for donating mini golf vouchers, to my teen volunteers who made the six weeks of crafts and ice cream social possible for 235 kids and 48 adults: Celeste Banfill, Brianna Jones, Emerson Doiron, Sarah, Kaela and Kari Simoniar, and Tiffany Champagne, and to the parent volunteers who helped out. Thanks to the Hampstead Stage Company of Barnstead for allowing us to reserve and fill a large block of seats to their kids production of Prince Caspian. We had a great time, made a lot of fiends along the way, and had some cute crafts to take home.

We would also like to thank our generous sponsors who made our summer raffles possible: Chucksters of Chichester and Jay’s Bayside Golf of Alton for donating vouchers for ice cream and rounds of golf for our adult raffle basket, in addition to the vouchers for each child who completed the summer reading program. Funspot of Gilford for donating gift cards for each of our raffle baskets. Red River Theatre of Concord for donating two movie passes and Boondock Video of Barnstead for donating two movie rental vouchers for the Adult Movie Night Raffle Basket, won by Michele Beauregard, whose winning ticket was selected from 286 adult reader entries! Smith Candies and Ice Cream of Alton for donating a $10 gift certificate to our Tween Candy Raffle Basket that was also filled with Smith’s Candy, won by Tiffany Champagne. Marie Stackhouse for donating our two Kids Cuddly toys for our Kids Raffle gift, won by Jozie Drolet.

Don’t forget, if you have not picked up your Reading Program Certificate Packages, they are here waiting for you at the Library.

This year we had 105 children participate in the Reading Program. As the children recorded their books at the Library, they added a summertime hot air bubble to fill up the giant hot air balloon in the Library. The colorful hot air balloons decorated by our summer readers filled our 10 by 12-foot bay window in the children’s section to make a beautiful mural for everyone to enjoy. Our kids read 1261 books during the six weeks and took over 500 challenges for prizes! Congratulations to all our participants this summer and to all the parents and guardians who made it possible for the kids to get to the Library and complete the program. Just like the hot air balloons, we were all high flying and sails aloft! Thanks so much to all our great readers!

Letter To The Editor
Board of Selectmen, Town of Barnstead, NH,
RE: Lakes Region Pellets, LLC

I can’t sleep. I have a persistent headache and I am stressed out! The noise has been constant since the end of July, when it started with a sound of a wind tunnel or a tornado coming through. The noise progressed to loud motors and machines running constantly with intermittent beeping sounds of trucks and forklifts. The noise is 24 hours a day, including week-ends.

On Sunday, August 16, I wanted to enjoy kayaking on the beautiful Suncook River, leaving from the Big River Recreation Area, but the peace and quiet of the trip was spoiled by noise from the Lakes Region Pellets, LLC.

I was under the impression that we had a noise ordinance in the Town of Barnstead. Also, I thought, as residents and taxpayers, we have a legal right to quiet enjoyment of our homes and properties. If the noise continues, the property values will plummet because no one will want to purchase a property within earshot of the Lakes Region Pellets, LLC.

Yes, I am for growth and economic development to enhance our lives and our economy, but it should not cause distress and untoward effect on a segment of our taxpaying residents, properties and our town.

Our zoning regulations do have an ordinance for environmental impact regarding noise and air quality, see:

Section 6-5 Environmental Impact Assessment, Statement of noise control, methods and procedures, 6-5.07, 6-5-08

Section 8-1 Business …..”that the business or industry or structure would not be seriously detrimental or offensive to the owners of adjoining property, or to the Town, or would tend to radically reduce property values of other properties.”

Is Lakes Region Pellets, LLC exempt from these regulations and has an independent company done air quality and noise testing, and if so, are the results available?

Respectfully,
Katherine Jenks

Music In The Park

Barnstead’s “Music in the Park” ends the season swinging!  Swinging, that is, to the sounds of the East Bay Jazz Ensemble at Old Home Day, Saturday, August 29th. Their toe tapping, heart throbbing music of the great musicians, Tommy Dorsey, Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman, Glenn Miller and more, shows us all that what is may be old, is new again!

Come on out all day or just for parts of the day, but just make sure to come to Barnstead’s Old Home Day celebration. Bring the kids, neighbors and friends and a blanket - but this time, plan on enjoying the scrumptious dinner that begins at 4:30 p.m. The concert runs from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m., just as the fireworks begin. See you there!

I would like to say a special Thank You to Dew’s Tree Service of Strafford, NH, for work done at my home. I had two big trees that were leaning towards my house. Dew and Don took both of the trees down in a safe, professional manner at a very fair price with no problems at all . With all the scams and ripoffs in the world, it is good to know there are still local businesses that will work hard and do a good job and not over charge people. I am a very satisfied customer and recommend Dew’s Tree Service to anyone who needs tree work done.

Old Home Day activities will begin with the 5K Road Race in the morning.  Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. at the race starting line on Parade Circle.  The race begins at 9:00 a.m. and runs along a flat, fast course that offers a fun race for runners of all abilities.

Barnstead Fire Rescue will be presenting a pancake breakfast at the Parade Grounds starting at 8:00 a.m.  Come join them for pancakes, sausage and beverages under the canopy tent.  Breakfast will be served until 10:30 a.m. so that hungry road racers can be served.  This breakfast was hugely popular last year, so you might want to get there early!
Ten o’clock marks the start of all sorts of fun activities.  The Fun Run for youngsters is held in the center of the Parade Ground, the Old Home Day Auction gets underway under the Auction Tent, and vendor booths and exhibits all open at 10:00.

And, best of all, 10:00 a.m. marks the beginning of the kids games!  There will be games for children of all ages:  ring toss, bean bag toss, duck pond, fishing game, penny toss, putting greens, a jailhouse that you must sing your way out of, and a dunking booth!

Barnstead Fire Rescue, Inc. will be hosting an open house at the Parade Station from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m.  Apparatus will be displayed for viewing, the Kids Smokehouse and Safety Trailer will be available to help kids learn and experience what to do if they find themselves in a burning building.  Exhibits of the history of the Fire-Rescue service and Barnstead’s fire companies will be displayed in the meeting room at Station 1.  Also on display will the Barnstead Fire-Rescue’s official Centennial Banner, based upon the art design of Nick Bugieda, a Barnstead resident and student at Prospect Mountain High School.  Come appreciate the history of our town!

At 10:30 a.m., get ready to join in the MUSTER!  In the fire service, a muster is an assembly of firefighters who compete against each other at contests that demonstrate their firefighting skills.  At Old Home Day’s muster, contestants will be invited to compete at a variety of contests including a bucket brigade, race against clock to don protective gear, assemble and flow water hoses to knock balls off cones and a hose lay.  Muster will continue until 12:00 noon.

The entries and winners under the Art, Photo and Coloring Contest will be available for viewing at 10:30 a.m.  This year’s competition was open to area residents of all ages and artistic talents.

The cakewalk begins at 11:00 a.m. at the bandstand.  This is a unique event where everyone gets a chance to pick from a wide array of home-baked goodies.  Come join the fun!

The kids’ bicycle parade will kick off from the Congregational Church at 12:00 noon.  There will be judging on three categories:  decorations consistent with the fire service centennial theme, patriotic decorations, and “Most Creative” decorations.

The Rock Climbing wall will open at 12:00 noon.  This very popular attraction is being brought back this year.  Climbing will be available from 12:00 noon to 3:00 p.m.  Tickets for the Rock Climbing will be available at the table where raffle tickets and tee shirts are sold.

There will be entertainment, contests and exhibits throughout the afternoon.  The Woods at Beauty Hill will provide a 1:00 p.m. demonstration and an opportunity to try disc golf.  Wayne From Maine will provide childrens stories and music at 2:00 p.m.  A fire extinguisher demonstration and a basketball throwing contest will both begin at 3:00 p.m.

The Canoe and Kayak Race will be held on the Suncook River in the afternoon. Registration begins at 12:00 noon at the boat launch behind the Police Station in Center Barnstead.  The race begins promptly at 2:00 p.m., proceeding down the Big River down-stream to meet the Suncook River, and then on to the finish line just upstream of the dam, near the OHD festivities at the Parade.

Barnstead’s Citizen of the Year will be awarded at 1:00 p.m. at the bandstand on the Parade Grounds.  This year was a hotly contested selection process, with many very deserving candidates being nominated.  Come hear who was the finalist for Barnstead Citizen of the Year.

The Blueberry Baking Contest will follow the presentation of Citizen of the Year at the bandstand.  We hope you will participate in this year’s Contest.  Pick some blueberries, get out the family recipe and have fun joining in this annual Old Home Day event.  Any home-baked good containing blueberries is eligible.

The Youth Talent contest will take place at 4:00 p.m.  Young performers will have the opportunity for fun, prizes and their very own 15 minutes (or so) of fame.  Karaoke will return again this year, immediately following the Youth Talent show.  Last year, we had an unbelievably lively group of talented karaoke singers who had lots of fun entertaining us with their performances.  No prior registration is required.

The Old Home Day Dinner is presented this year by the Suncook Valley Sno-Riders.  Dinner will be served at the Barnstead Fire Rescue Station 1 on Parade Road from 4:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.  Dinner will feature half a barbequed chicken, Flanders bean hole beans, rolls, salad, dessert and beverages.  This is going to be a fantastic dinner — come early, before they sell out!

The day’s events will be topped off with a band concert by East Bay Jazz Ensemble at 6:30 p.m., followed by the FIREWORKS immediately following the band concert.

This will prove to be a full day of fun activities that you and your family won’t want to miss.  See you at Barnstead Old Home Day!
