COBALD News

The first COBALD potluck supper and movie night of the season concluded with a discussion about the local economy. The Power of Community told the story of how Cubans  - faced with Peak Oil, the collapse of the Soviet Union and sanctions imposed by the United States  - worked as a community to orchestrate a successful transformation to organic agriculture that resulted in the survival and improved health of their people.

This story can be used as a possible model for us here in the northern climes.

Local agriculture can be supported without the need of advanced technology that depends on large equipment and large investments.

As we experience the economic downturn, let us also look at how our own expectations contributed to the failure of this economic system. Before the economy forces us to make the changes, let’s look at our own behaviors and see where there is room for improvement. Ride the bike to church Sunday morning. Plant a small vegetable garden.  Ride share to work and the grocery store. Support your local artisans and businesses. Trading time and skills with others is another good way to support the local economy.

We are in the process of setting up a  “Barter Board” and a community list serve where people can access an ongoing conversation about ways to survive in this economic climate, as well as share ideas about how to help the town of Barnstead grow in a sustainable manner.

The next meeting and Potluck Movie night is scheduled for Saturday, May 30th. at the Barnstead Town Hall from 5 pm – 7 pm., when we will show the film; The End of Suburbia.  Movie starts at 5:30 pm.

We also plan to have a discussion about the LET System… read about this at: http://www.gmlets.u-net.com/ and join in the conversation.
