Barnstead Old Home Day Is Off To A GREAT Start!

The first organizational meeting for Barnstead Old Home Day 2009 was a great success, with many of last year’s Committee members returning to assist again, and with a few new people stepping forward to help for the first time. If you are interested in helping to organize this year’s event, we can certainly still use some more people!

The next meeting of the Old Home Day Committee is scheduled for Wednesday, March 11, 2009, 6:30 p.m. at Barnstead Town Hall. We hope to see you there.

This year, Barnstead Old Home Day will help celebrate the centennial year of organized fire rescue service in the town of Barnstead. The Old Home Day Committee will be working with representatives of Barnstead Fire Rescue, Inc. to craft a fitting celebration of 100 years of fire protection services in our town.  Look for descriptions of the Old Home Day events and activities in upcoming articles. For more information regarding Old Home Day, call Eileen Murley at 435-6692

Library Says Thank You

The Oscar Foss Memorial Library in Center Barnstead would like to say a HUGE thank you to the members of the Center Barnstead Christian Church.

On Sunday, February 7th, we discovered a broken air handling unit in the basement of the library which basically turned the library into a sauna and there were several inches of water on the basement floor.

Rick Simoneau, one of the members of the Board of Trustees noticed that we had a room full of books for our book sale and wanted to get them out FAST! There were also several storage books and goods that we kept in the basement. Rick made a quick trip over to the Center Barnstead Christian Church and came back with a large group of very helpful volunteers who proceeded to “bucket brigade” the books upstairs. They took an hour out of their busy lives to help us save what we could and we wanted everyone to know how very grateful we are. It is so nice to know that there are always caring, giving people who are there to help you out. THANKS AGAIN to each and every one of you for your help!

Letter

Dear SVS Readers:
When it comes to priorities, I am amazed by the apparent lack of local wisdom. Yesterday at the State House, State Sovereignty was a huge issue (HCR6). However considering declining resources such as cheap crude oil, little attention is being given to regional food production. Less than 5% of food consumed in NH is grown here. Cheap oil enables its transport from Florida, CaliforniaChili, China, etc. This is clearly unsustainable! When fossil fuels sky rocket again, so will food and domestic energy. So many people are now “on the edge” we must reconsider priorities!

So we in Barnstead are in the process of co-creating a permaculture farm school, where anyone (especially young people) can learn to produce local food without poisons - GMO’s and petro fertilizers and do  it year round. We are open to co-participation. Inventors, students and teachers, more land and facilities, etc. We have survival in mind! We think folks are ready. Our PC. school will be farms based on the following examples:

1. Positive Panloving Relationships
2. Enhancing Biological and cultural diversity
3. Blending with nature
4. Global connections and synergies
5. Bio regional self reliance (localization)
6. Grass roots democracy, etc.

We hope farm schools will pop up everywhere. For more insight, we encourage you to google “The Power Of Community.”

Talk to us.
