Locke Lakers

By Vi Russell

Locke Lakers met August 12, 2008. We had the annual barbecue on July 24th, the day of the tornado that hit Barnstead. The chicken arrived 2 hours late due to the storm, but those who made it had a wonderful time. People who couldn’t get to their houses were fed and given a place to wait out the storm. We had lots of food and drinks left over, so we took them to the workers who were helping clean up the disaster. We are planning Monkey Golf and a Pot Luck Dinner on September 6, 2008.

On September 27, 2008, we will be having a Mystery Dinner at the Colony Lodge, Judy will be planning the play.

The next meeting is August 26, 2008, at 9:30 A.M. for coffee and the meeting starts at 10:00 A.M. See You There.

You’re Invited To Rally Day

Autumn is a special time of year: School starts again, the leaves are changing, and new activities begin. At Center Barnstead Christian Church we’re starting a new season of activities for the whole family and we’d like you to join in. On Sunday, September 7th we are ready to Kick-Off a new Sunday School year with a Rally Day. This is a time when you find out who your Sunday School teacher will be and what you will be learning about throughout the year. Our Sunday School classes are divided up by age. The children have fun learning basic Bible truths from God’s Word each week. There is a teen class and classes for the adults, too. Join us at 9:30 AM to find out more. Together we’ll have a great season! The Center Barnstead Christian Church is located on Route 126, next to the Town Hall. For more information, please call the church at 269-8831.

Barnstead Old Home Day 2008 ~ It’s a Country Fair!

Barnstead’s Old Home Day will be held on Saturday, August 23, 2008 at Barnstead Parade.  Mark the date and join the fun!

Old Home Day activities will begin with the 5K Road Race in the morning.  Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. at the Barnstead Fire Rescue Station 1 on Parade Road.  The race begins at 9:00 a.m. from the start line on Parade Circle.  The race runs out Parade Road to the intersection of Route 126 and then returns to the finish line at Parade Circle.  This is a flat, fast course that offers a fun race for runners of all abilities.

Barnstead Fire Rescue will be presenting a pancake breakfast at the Parade Grounds starting at 8:00 a.m.  Come join them for pancakes, sausage and beverages under the canopy tent.  Breakfast will be served until 10:30 a.m. so that hungry road racers can be served.

When you have finished breakfast, come preview all the items available for bidding at the Old Home Day 2008 auction.  We have over seventy-five donations of a wide variety of auction items from art work, jewelry, CDs by local artists, specialty gift baskets, internet service, pizza, quality craft items, collectibles and much, much more!  Then, join auctioneer George Twigg under the auction tent at 10:00 a.m. to bid and walk away with a good buy and a good feeling that you have helped to support local businesses and Barnstead Old Home Day for another year.

Ten o’clock marks the start of all sorts of fun activities.  The fun run at that time for youngsters is held in the center of the Parade Ground. Come root for your favorite youngster as they compete in a race designed only for the young.   Vendor booths and exhibits all open at 10:00.  Check out the Barnstead Historical Society’s exhibit on the dance bands and music in Barnstead of decades long ago.

And, best of all, 10:00 a.m. marks the beginning of the kids games!  There will be games for children of all ages:  ring toss, bean bag toss, water balloon crush, egg walk, saltine whistle along a walking course, face painting.  And, new this year, there will be a rock climbing wall, a jailhouse that you must sing your way out of, and a dunking booth. Country fairs are made for kids, and this one will have something for everyone!

The entries and winners under the Art, Photo and Coloring Contest will be available for viewing at 10:30 a.m.  This year’s competition was open to area residents of all ages and artistic talents.  Top entries will be photographed and featured in the Old Home Day Booklet for 2009 and will be displayed on the Town Website.

The cakewalk begins at 11:00 a.m. at the bandstand.  This is a unique event where everyone gets a chance to pick from a wide array of home-baked goodies.  Come join the fun!

The kids’ bicycle parade will kick off from the Congregational Church at 12:00 noon.  There will be judging on three categories:  decorations consistent with the “A Country Fair” theme, Patriotic decorations, and “Most Creative” decorations.   Following the bicycle parade, there will be a presentation on bicycle safety in front of the bandstand by Officer Rob Kelley of the Barnstead Police Department.

There will be entertainment and exhibits throughout the afternoon.  The River Band will perform under the entertainer’s tent at 1:00 p.m.  The Woods at Beauty Hill will provide a demonstration and an opportunity to try disc golf.  Wayne From Maine will provide children’s stories and music at 2:00 p.m.

The Canoe and Kayak Race will be held on the Suncook River in the afternoon. Registration begins at 12:00 noon at the boat launch behind the Police Station in Center Barnstead.  The race begins promptly at 2:00 p.m., proceeding down the Big River down-stream to meet the Suncook River, and then on to the finish line just upstream of the dam, near the OHD festivities at the Parade.

Barnstead’s Citizen of the Year will be awarded at 2:45 p.m. at the bandstand on the Parade Grounds.  This year was a hotly contested selection process, with many very deserving candidates being nominated.  Come hear who was the finalist for Barnstead Citizen of the Year.

The Blueberry Baking Contest will follow the presentation of Citizen of the Year at the bandstand.  We hope you will participate in this year’s Contest.  Pick some blueberries, get out the family recipe and have fun joining in this annual Old Home Day event.  Any home-baked good containing blueberries is eligible.

At 3:30 p.m. this year we will be able to enjoy a police dog demonstration from a member of the Barnstead Police Department.  Come see how canine police officers can greatly enhance the capabilities of a local police department.

The youth talent and karaoke contest will take place at 4:00 p.m.  Young performers will have the opportunity for fun, prizes and their very own 15 minutes (or so) of fame.
The Old Home Day Dinner is presented this year by the Suncook Valley Sno-Riders.  Dinner will be served at the Barnstead Fire Rescue Station 1 on Parade Road from 4:00 p.m. To 6:30 p.m.  Dinner will feature barbequed steamship round roast beef, Flanders bean hole beans, corn, rolls, salad, dessert and beverages.  This is going to be a fantastic dinner - come early, before they sell out!

The day’s events will be topped off with a band concert by East Bay Jazz Ensemble at 6:30 p.m., followed by the FIREWORKS immediately following the band concert.

This will prove to be a full day of fun activities that you and your family won’t want to miss.  See you at Barnstead Old Home Day!

Barnstead Old Home Day 2008 ~ Calling all Cakes!

Barnstead’s Old Home Day includes a very popular event called the Cakewalk. Cakewalk contestants pay an entry fee of one dollar to walk around a circle of Frisbees with  numbers on them.  Music is played…the contestants circle…the music stops… a number is drawn…who is the winner?!?!  The person who is standing at the Frisbee with the same number as that just drawn gets to take their pick of any of the scrumptious baked goods laid out on the long table!  A sweet treat, indeed!

The Cakewalk is a lot of fun and draws a lot of contestants.  It depends, however, on the donation of numerous baked goods from members of the community.  You can help by volunteering to bring your own favorite confection.  Any home-baked or store-bought dessert is welcome – it doesn’t have to be a cake.

Donations can be brought to the bandstand on Barnstead Old Home Day, August 23, at Barnstead Parade.  Please have donated baked goods at the bandstand by 10:30 a.m.  Thank you!
